Hyun Bin to take on remake of 60s classic
Hyun Bin has announced his next role, and like Jeon Do-yeons latest, it will be a remake of a 1960s film. This one is the 1966 classic Late Autumn (also called Manchu), by genius director Lee Man-hee. Currently, actress Tang Wei (Lust, Caution) is said to be considering the female lead role.
The remake is a co-production with an American production company and will be filmed entirely in the U.S. with English dialogue. (Eep! How good is Hyun Bins English?)
The original film Late Autumn, according to this (English-language) review by JoongAng Daily, is a masterpiece with a place in Korean film history. It heralded the beginning of Korean modernist movies. It tells the story of a short-lived love between a woman who is granted a special leave from prison where she is a model inmate and a man who is on the run for counterfeiting money.
Unfortunately, the original has been lost and no known copies exist. However, a remake of the same name was produced in 1982, starring a younger Kim Hye-ja (Mother), who won a best actress award at the Manila International Film Festival the following year for her performance.
According to a representative of Hyun Bins management company, the actor is currently busy studying English for the role and is about to finalize contracts, while Tang Weis casting is still being negotiated. The production had at one point considered A-listers Jang Dong-gun and Lee Junki before confirming Hyun Bin.
Directing the remake is Kim Tae-yong of Family Ties. Kim has already left Korea for Seattle to prepare filming, which is to begin at the end of November or early December.
