Ceci Interview
It has been 4 months since 2PM has stood in front of Ceci's camera. During those months, they have gone through some difficult times. On an October day, as they were carefully preparing for their first official album <01:59PM>, we were able to see the somewhat unfamiliar yet still passionate faces of 2PM members.
1. Wooyoung doing an interview. Wooyoung is great at telling stories. Junsu is envious of this "Ssanti Gag", as he likes to call it. This day, Wooyoung continually repeated that "I'm still lacking in a lot of places."
2. The ad concept of "real brownie" came from 2PM's real chocolate like abs.
3. The shoot started at 9:30 AM and continued on till 5 PM. Junho, who is controlling his diet is eating his salad.
5. Chansung and Junsu who finished their individual cuts, enjoying some brownies.
6. 2PM showing off their wild and sexy side during the shooting, while showing off their lovely facial expressions behind the scenes.
We were able to meet 2PM again at an ad photoshoot for Market-O's Real Brownie. This was before their comeback on November 12th Mnet 'Oh~Good! Concert' was confirmed, and while the Jaebum controversy was still a hot issue. Perhaps because of this, the studio was filled with an air of caution. We greeted the members who probably have changed since the last time we met them in August at the Ceci photoshoot. Between that time, Junsu had lost 7kg. We were able to see Wooyoung who was pacing around the room practicing singing in a loud voice.
Junho showed us his blood-shot eyes explaining that he had stayed up the night before recording, while Nichkhun was 'bewitching' the staff with his lovely smile. Because this ad emphasizes the "real chocolate abs", they were doing pushups between cuts. At times they would share lame jokes and play around which showed us that they were still the same boys from before.
"A few days ago, we did the CF filming, and they told us that day that it was gonna involve us showing off our bodies. It was a shock to me 'cause I wasn't really working out. So for today's photoshoot,
I prepared in advance for a few days." (Taecyeon)
"I usually watch what I eat, and work out too. But as you can see, my clothes are pretty conservative. Thank you wardrobe team for blessing me with this. Haha!" (Junsu)
"I don't really work out, but during the filming the staff kept asking me to take off my clothes, so I felt really pressured. I decided to work out from now on because I want to be able to show it off anytime." (Nichkhun)
Talking to us between takes, Nichkhun who usually say nice, polite things, suddenly answered us with his honest opinion making us laugh. I thought that even though this was a picture with a missing puzzle piece, they were still the same 2PM.
We made a small interview room by putting together some chairs in the corner of the busy and hectic studio. Because we had made an agreement to not talk about Jaebum, I couldn't ask "When is Jaebum coming back? You were very shocked right?" But it was meaningful to hear the thoughts of each member who was going through a lot at the time. It was especially interesting to hear about the moment they decided they wanted to become a singer.
"It was when I was in 1st grade after watching Michael Jackson's performance. I officially started dancing in junior high, but because my dad was really against it, I had to go study at hakwon (*afterschool academy) until 1am and went to dance practice until 3~4am. Mom would usually wait quietly until then and open the door for me carefully so that dad wouldn't wake up. After a year, my dad finally found out. He tried to wreck the dance studio so I had to get on my knees to beg. I cried and I even tried to convince him by writing him letters. Ah~ now, he monitors me a lot and supports me. If my dad had just said, 'Okay, do it' [at the time] I don't think I would have practiced that hard until dawn. Rather, I think it's because of my dad that I realized how much I loved dancing." (Wooyoung)
"It was my freshman year of highschool. My friends got annoyed easily and grew tiresome of things, but I was consistently happy when I was dancing and singing. I was even more excited when I got into acting class during sophomore year. I realized, Ah~ this must be my path, and I started going to auditions during summer break." (Junho)
"I started getting into hiphop music after watching Donny Hathaway's live performance of 'A song for you' when I was in 4th grade at my uncle's place in Singapore. I REALLY got into it my freshman year of highschool after I watched the video of 'That's what friends are for' by Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston, and Dionne Warwick." (Junsu)
"Actually before I started this, I did sports. I did Tae kwon do and Kumdo. If I didn't come into JYP I probably would have been a Tae kwon do master or Kumdo master. But after I learned how to sing and dance, and started acting, I could only think about that like a crazy person." (Chansung)
Like other idol groups, they have gone through rigorous training years ranging from 1.5 years to 4 years. From the story of Junsu who had to drink bathroom faucet water because he was so thirsty after a rigorous dance lesson to
Junho's story of how he came in 1st on the survival show but was almost kicked out because he did not show improvement, and due to the 'inferiority complex' he was able to fight through the situation.
Chansung's story of how his house was only 20 minutes away from the building but did not go home on purpose because he was afraid of becoming too complacent and lazy.
Taecyeon's story of how after hearing that he cannot debut if he can't do acrobatics, he recklessly went on to do a difficult 'House' technique and injured his waist, but still successfully achieved the acrobatics later on. Seeing their expressions while recounting these times of struggle (that can probably be a novel in itself) I saw an alluring side of them that I wasn't able to see even during their most powerful performances.
1. To show off their sexy muscles they are putting on lotion. It's funny to see the clips on the back of their clothes (used so that it fits them better. )
2. Chansung and the photographer chatting about the printed pictures.
3. Taecyeon listening carefully to the directions of the photographer. What kind of cut was it that he would have an expression like that on his face?
4. Chansung putting on lotion.
5. Between cuts, they were constantly doing pushups so that they can make their muscles stand out.
"Right now we are concentrating on running toward our goal. We don't know where that is, but we know it's there and we're running towards it. All the members are running towards it." (Wooyoung)
"I'm curious as to how far I can go. What can I do to get to the place I want, what can I do to be accepted by everyone, I'm pondering about how high the value of the brand Lee Junho can go up." (Junho)
"I never felt stifled because of the notion that public figures have to act a certain way. Until now, I have tried my best to live an honest and virtuous life, and I've tried my best so that my parents could be proud of me. Even now as a public figure, that remains the same. Many fans and people who love me are watching me -- do I really have the right to solely pursue my own happiness?" (Taecyeon)
"When I feel exhausted and lonely I ask myself this: 10 years from now, where do you want to be, and in what form. If I think of the future that way and set up a plan, I feel more strength." (Nichkhun)
"I watched the movie 'Good morning President' yesterday. Everyone thinks the President is this special person, but they are the same as us in how they feel happiness. The president goes on dates, does lotto, gets divorced, fights with their spouse.... There's nothing different. It'd be nice if everyone understands that 2PM are like regular people, that we feel love, happiness, sadness and anger just like everyone else." (Chansung)
"2PM has reached their success? It's still too early to say that. It's true that we have achieved our dreams of becoming singers, but it's only the beginning. If we are running towards our dreams, I believe that we should be able to enjoy even the pain that follows. If the path towards your goal is not a pleasant one, then after achieving that goal, would you truly be happy?" (Junsu)
