[10LINE] Lee Seung-gi Senior Reporter : Kang Myoung-Seok two@10asia.co.kr 2009.12.08 00:28
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lee Seung-gi Five years ago, he was a high schooler who sang of his love for a woman older than him. Three years ago, he acted out the part of an immature college student who gets married. Two years ago, he started appearing as a clumsy-in-an-attractive way guy in variety show "1 Night 2 Days". Now, he is a man who has graduated college in real life and shook the hearts of many female fans across the country by starring in a TV series with ratings of over 40 percent.
Lee Jin-sung A singer who attended the same high school as Lee Seung-gi. Lee Jin-sung was Lee Seung-gi's senior by two years and picked him as the next main vocal for his band of which he himself was the lead vocalist. Lee Seung-gi took interest in the band because he liked artists such as Sting, Bryan Adams and Skid Row. But he never thought of pursuing music as a career since his academic record was at top of his entire school's.
Lee Sun-hee Singer and producer. She noticed Lee Seung-gi who was rehearsing at a concert hall and decided to encourage him to become a singer thinking, 'He could make it big with his clean cut looks, great singing skills and also being as smart as he is.' She persuaded Lee Seung-gi's mom who was a fan of hers and trained him for two years for his debut. Of Lee Sun-hee, Lee Seung-gi said, "She can interpret every genre of music. And she is someone who I am proud about but there are many times I am worried that I might be burdening her."
Kim Sa-rang The 'noona' [the Korean word used when a male refers to a female older than him] who appeared in the music video of Lee Seung-gi's debut song "You're My Woman". He also gazed longingly into a large photograph of top actress Kim Tae-hee while singing the song on SBS music show "Inkigayo". Such tactics were used to emphasize his image as a younger man. During an interview he once said, "Women who have boyfriends younger than them say they are worried that their man might leave them for a younger girl. But for guys, a female who is older than him is still a 'woman' to him that he loves." Lee differentiated himself from other idol group singers by appealing himself as the decent young guy.
Hong Kyung-in Actor. He and Lee together went to the finals of a quiz show titled "Brain Survivor" on MBC variety program "Sunday Sunday Night". After Lee won the quiz, he said he was glad that he had managed not to disgrace his school and his agency actively made known the fact that Lee was actually the student representative for his entire school. Lee did not have a mobile phone in high school because he said he "didn't need one" and his mother's friend once wrote on the Internet, "He treated his parents as if they were close friends that he could talk to with ease yet managed to be respectful toward."
Ku Hye-sun Actress. She appeared opposite Lee in his acting debut MBC sitcom "Nonstop 5" where he says he learned many lessons. "There are many instances where singers will look down to the audience when they're singing on stage. So this could give them incorrect posture where your shoulders would stiffen. I was given the opportunity to fix this through acting. I think an actors eye stands level to the public's since they have to be able to act on a street vendor where many passers-by may be watching or in the middle of the forest where nobody may be watching." This may be why Lee was able to appear in dramas such as KBS' "The Infamous Chil Sisters" and SBS' Shining Inheritance" alongside many middle-aged actors.
Kang Ho-dong A show host that loves Lee. They currently appear together on KBS variety show "1 Night 2 Days". Kang pretended to make fun of Lee when he first appeared on his show " X Man" because Lee was a decent guy who sang well yet lacked in rap and dancing, and then emphasized the 'clumsy' side to Lee in "1 Night 2 Days". But Lee is not just a clumsy guy. To Kang who asked him, "Do you think you could live without me?" Lee responded, "I want to find out if I can or not. I'll buy you :-)-way plane ticket." He may seem he is clumsy but at the same time is brave enough to respond to Kang in such a way.
Yoon Mira The actress who appeared as Lee's mom in "The Infamous Chil Sisters". Lee expanded his realm of acting in this drama by taking on the role of an immature mama's boy. Lee said he feels substitute satisfaction out of playing an image different from his usual. "In basketball terminology you could say I was sort of the sixth man. I learned that every actor has his own place in a drama," Lee said after finishing shooting "Sisters". This attitude of his may explain why he took on a home drama alongside many middle-aged actors rather than a mini-series. Lee steadily gained experience by making appearances "Sisters" and "1 Night 2 Days" where many of his senior actors appear, earning him recognition throughout all age groups with the popularity of both shows. He started as the 'sixth man' to gain a fanbase slowly but surely, rather than shoot to popularity instantly by taking on a leading role from the start.
Na Young-suk Producer of "1 Night 2 Days". Na said he cast Lee for the show because "he always tried to be funny but wasn't and always really tries to be good at what he does but ends up being quite sloppy and clumsy at it." And as he expected, Lee became the character who seems to be quite obsessed about cleanliness but will use every means possible to escape from an island. This is how Lee rid himself from the rigid image of being a model student. Another side to Lee is that "he concentrates solely on whatever he is focused on," Na said. Lee lost 10 kilograms by running marathons before and after his debut, after the success of his first album he went out to do manual labor which earned him 54,000 won a day to make himself realize that money is not something that one makes easily and his motto is "There is a huge difference between 99 and 100. People who are aiming for 99 are somewhat at ease but those who are aiming for 100 never loosen up." This may explain Lee's implicitly strong will which has made him keep working without taking a break since his debut.
Han Hyo-joo Co-star of TV series "Shining Inheritance." The ratings of this hit drama and airing and reruns of "1 Night and 2 Days" added up to 70 percent. Of course, Lee is not the only one who should be credited for such ratings. "Shining Inheritance" shone with the support of its experienced middle-aged actors while Lee's reaction or expressions tended to be stiff at times. But the influence his popularity from "1 Night 2 Days" had on the TV series cannot go ignored. "Shining Inheritance" is the drama which will take him from being the sixth man to an ace. We hope Lee continues to remain the man that thinks, "Doing my best with what I've been given, suits me the best."
