Taiwan-based actress Barbie Hsu is set to sizzle in the upcoming romantic comedy Hot Summer Days, scheduled to hit screens on February 11. With a cast of 10 of China's most popular actors, including Jacky Cheung (Blood Brothers), Rene Liu (A World Without Thieves) and Daniel Wu (Overheard), Hsu is sporting a new short-hair cut and smoky eyes, a look that may take fans by surprise.
"Hot Summer Days is my breakthrough performance and boldest appearance," Hsu said at the film's launch ceremony, while admitting that she had early struggles and doubts when shooting started.
Hsu has a reputation for her immaculate appearance and beautiful long hair, earning her the nickname of Taiwan's "cosmetic queen." Her long locks were rarely tampered with for filming, however, for her cool motorbike-racer character in Hot Summer Days, things were very different.
"I was a bit nervous and unsure about cutting my hair short for the film but the haircut turned out a successful change," she laughed, adding that she should have tried the style earlier.
For the relatively conservative actress, whose roles are usually innocent schoolgirls or upper-class ladies, wearing black leather pants and singlet posed an even great challenge for Hsu. According to the film's director Tony Chan, when Hsu first tried on her costume on she hid in the dressing room for over 20 minutes. Hsu explained that she had never worn such tight and flimsy clothes, even in real life, let alone in front of the cameras.
"It was embarrassing to have kept the whole crew waiting, but I finally managed to adjust my attitude and come out and act. After the first few shots, I found that when I put my heart to acting, what I wore did not matter."
Her costar Nicholas Tse (Bodyguards and Assassins), famous for his coolness and lack of communication in real life, also posed a challenge for Hsu. "I was quite nervous before our first scene. Even though we've known each other for a decade, he just waved to me when we first met on set."
However, once the cameras started rolling, Tse was simply a busboy trying to pursue her. "The sparkle between the two is enormous," Chan commented.
Hsu began her career in showbiz as part of the duo SOS (later renamed as ASOS) with her younger sister Dee Hsu, who later became a popular TV host and personality.
Hsu is best known for starring in Meteor Garden, a Taiwanese TV adaptation of the Japanese manga cartoon, in 2001. She turned to focus on films in 2008 and has since starred in several blockbusters such as Connected and On His Majesty's Secret Service.
According to local media reports, Hsu topped the earnings list of all Taiwanese female artists last year, raking in a reported 800 million yuan ($117.2 million), which she credited to pure luck. Hsu added that most of her income was from advertisements, while starring in films had not necessarily made her lots of money.
"I considered myself as a freshman in the film circle so I charged like a freshman," she said, stating that almost all of her film money has been spent on buying clothes for film promotions.
"I hope to double my price in the new year!" she added.
