Fandom Turns Into Philanthropy
By Bae Ji-sook Staff Reporter
Gone are the days when fans knocked down fences or screamed loudly to catch a glimpse of their idols, causing embarrassment for their favorite stars. These days, they make the stars proud by turning into philanthropists, pleasing both parties.
According to the charity group Beautiful Foundation, online fans of K-pop star Kim Hyun-joong, has donated over 14 million won Tuesday for university students staying at orphanages or shelters.
This is the second time Kim's fans have donated money to the foundation for such purposes.
"We wanted to do something good for the society. The fact that the beneficiaries are around the same age as Kim gave us inspiration. We made the donation in Kim's name because we know he would want to be involved in the charity, too," Jeon Eun-ju, who initiated the event, said.
Like Jeon, many fans are turning their stars' birthday parties or regular fan meetings into charity events. They raise funds but keep a low-key approach to avoid media spotlight.
Members of Star Jiwoo, the fan club of actress Choi Ji-woo, give away free meals to the homeless once a month.
They also regularly visit welfare centers to hand out food, blankets and other necessities. When actor Lee Jun-ki went on a charity trip to Indonesia earlier last year, his fans sent money to a local welfare center before Lee had arrived.
More celebrities are becoming actively involved in charity with their fans. It gives them more press coverage and also a good image.
Actor So Ji-sub showed off his six-pack abs on his "star calendar." His fan club holds the exclusive rights for sales, of which proceeds were donated to supporting single moms, heart patients, and seniors living alone. The event has been held for more than six years and is widely copied among other supporters.
Even overseas fans are following the trend. Japanese fans published an ode to movie star Lee Byung-hun. The proceeds of the first edition, amounting to 6.5 million won, were donated to UNICEF. The international organization recently sent the fan club a thank-you plaque.
"Fans began to understand that their stars are interested in charity work. Instead of holding self-consuming events, they have found more meaningful ways to express their affection," Kwon Yon-je, spokeswoman for the Beautiful Foundation, said. "They are now following, sharing and moreover, leading stars' life styles and philanthropy efforts," she said.
