In order to make any judgement and criticism, one needs to have correct information and a certain degree of understanding about the movie industry, not to mention some understanding of other strategic factors that the Government has in terms of their policies on cultural and natrional security issues first. It looks like these two characters, Manit and Apichartpong, are either lacking in these required knowledge or they are just completely ignorant to be exposing themselves to such false accusations and protests. It is so sad to see this country now full of these ignorant people who always scream for their "rights" and have no notion of their own duties. At the end of the day, this protest boils down to greed and jealousy.
The important thing to notice is that this movie is a joint cooperation between the state and the movie maker to make a film that would remind all Thais about their own roots and ancestry....to be proud of who they are. The amount of 100 MB is nothing if they can achieve even a fraction of that goal, especially when this country is falling apart into pieces as a result of a social divide that is happening in front of our eyes at present. Certain things are just not quantifiable but the fruits of this investment, in my opinion, is more than the cost of the investment.
Second point is that this is a business proposition, not a hand-out. Certain amount of proceeds need to be given back to the State once the movie is shown. This is more than fair to all parties concerned.
Thirdly, a movie of this magnitude and quality requires a large amount of investment not only in terms of bahts and satangs, but also in terms of talent and knowledge. Before criticising the cost of making such a movie, it is best that one should be bench-marking the production costs of such movies acoss the international film industry and one will immediately see that 100 MB is not enough to pay for such a grand production.
Fourthly, this Naresuan movie part 3 and 4 will belong to the State and there is so much more that the government can do to get the mileage out of its investment if it wants to do so. In this information age there are countless things that can be done increase the awareness of the population at large with reference to the messages that are given during the show itself. Here, marketing is key. Schoolchildren could be persuaded to be more interested in Thai history by ways of creating digital communications network using this movie as a catalyst, for example. Even on purely financial basis, the proceeds from sales of movie premiums could go a long way toward improving the standard of rural education.
I have much more to say but feel that this may be enough to state my uncomfortable feelings toward these ignorant sceptics. If Thais do not love thier own country, who will? And this also tells us that a lot of people here are still interested about "saving a penny to pay for a pound" It is best to open up the mind and let reasons and rationale be the guiding light of direction, not some emotional greed that appears to be the case here.
