Richie Ren is all set to wow fans with sentimental hits and more at his concert in Genting Highlands tomorrow.
IT’S party time with Taiwanese singer-actor Richie Ren aka Richie Jen as he makes his way to Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands, for the Malaysian leg of his world tour concert tomorrow night. Passionate: ‘I really look forward to meeting Malaysian fans again,’ says Richie Ren.
His world tour concerts have taken him to the United States, Canada, Shanghai, China and recently Medan, Indonesia. Even as he is preparing for his upcoming concert here, the man continues working on other film and music projects.
Charming and unaffected, the very busy Ren did his phone interview in a staggered manner during short breaks while on the set in China filming movie The Dragon And Phoenix Inn, in which he plays an emperor.
He took a question while sitting on his throne arranging his imperial robes, which he exclaimed were so heavy that he needed help
Commenting on his preparation for his concert amid filming movies and recording albums, Ren quipped: “I’ve been singing for so many years that it all comes naturally.
“Most of all, I really look forward to meeting Malaysian fans again as they are such a warm and passionate bunch,” said Ren, 44, who last performed in Kuala Lumpur as one of the foreign acts during the Star Live Concert last December. His last solo concert in Malaysia was at Arena of Stars in late 2008.
Then, the director called for him to shoot a quick scene and he promised to return for another round of questions.
“Just awhile ago, I was in the midst of filming a scene with a whole bunch of people kneeling in front of me. I figured it wouldn’t be very nice to keep them all on their knees for so long so I decided to get it done first,” he apologised before continuing in his typical casual chatty manner.
The popular leading man who graduated from Taiwan Cultural University with a Degree in Physical Education has successfully turned his love for music and sports into a robust career in entertainment.
Ren, whose music can best be described as folk pop, has over two dozen albums under his belt. He also writes his own songs and has just released his latest Mandarin album under Rock Records titled Music Traveller, a 15-track album which includes some popular hits along with some new tunes.
Apart from being a successful recording artiste, Ren is also very much in demand in the Hong Kong film circle, having featured in close to 30 Cantonese films.
The popular leading man with a healthy build and distinctive Taiwanese-accented Cantonese has his pick of romantic comedies and action thrillers alike.
He was last seen in Dante Lam’s testosterone-laden actioners Fire Of Conscience (2010) with Leon Lai and The Sniper (2009) with Huang Xiao Ming and Edison Chen as well as Soi Cheang’s thriller Accident (2009) with Louis Koo.
He spoke of upcoming movies such as Flirting Scholar 2 (opens in Malaysian cinemas on July 8), with China heartthrob Huang and China actress Zhang Jingchu as well as The Dragon And Phoenix Inn with Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu.
So, which does he prefer: action thrillers or romantic comedies?
“Actually, I like them both. However, I also enjoy some variety. After filming a few action movies, I look forward to some sweet moments in romantic films. Then, after a few romances, I’ll be gearing up for some fast-paced action again.”
Needless to say, after these few rom-coms, Ren will be getting back into actioners again. Upcoming are crime thrillers Abduction, Law Wing Cheong’s Punished and Johnnie To’s Life Without Principle.
■ Richie Jen World Tour 2010 Concert will be staged at the Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands, tomorrow at 8pm. Tickets for the show are priced at RM430, RM330, RM240, RM150 and RM100. For concert details and ticket reservation, visit rwgenting.com.my or contact TEL: 03-2718 1118.
