WEANING PROCESS by aa แห่ง บ้านใหญ่ ค่ะ
Regarding weaning process, the zoo's decision on date is up to the readiness of the cub through observation. It took about 4-5 days for the process. First they were separated for just a few hours. Then more hours added each day.
TaiShan's date was set for February 22,2007. Let me remind you, it was simply a long and sad day. I still remember the sound of electric door closing between them forever at about 9pm. He had a long, last nursing session for the last time about an hour earlier. None of the US panda cubs ever get supplemental formula (powdered milk). For a few days he looked lost but not for long. He went to the door trying to find his mother but lasted just a few minutes. As a matter of fact, it's harder for us to wean than the cub itself. That's the truth!
National zoo had the web cam on Tai/Mei during the whole process. Other zoos did not do that. You wouldn't believe the phone calls and hate mails from the public who watched Tai on webcam blaming the zoo for being cruel and cares only breeding for profits. That's the reason why Atlanta and SanDiego zoos chose not to broadcast the weaning process.
Let me show you a poem by Pam G and photo of their last day together by Daniel! I have tears in my eyes when reading this once again.
