Biography
A written sketch on how Barbie worked hard to be the successful actress, host, author, singer, fashion icon, philanthropist she is now.
Barbie Hsu started in the biz at the age of seventeen together with her sister, Dee, as a packaged recording duo, SOS. The sisters who was still then in high school recorded their first album in 1994 and was titled Occupation of the Young[占领年轻]. Their first album was followed by six more recordings. During that span of time, ASOS t ook over Taiwans television scene via their entertainment-leisure news show, 100% Entertainment.
In 100% Ent., Barbie used to do silly things together with Dee. They will make ugly grimaces for entertainment. For the first year of the show, it was evident that Barbie had the stronger personality of the two. Over the years, Dee turned out to be the funny host while Barbie grew prettier and become more identified as the more elegant one, laying down more restrictions for herself. Aside from 100% Ent., the sisters also co-hosted with the famous Jacky Wu the variety show, Guess, Guess, Guess. The show was also being aired in Mainland China and Hong Kong thus expanding the sisters popularity.
In 2000, Barbie entered the world of acting and filmed the Meteor Garden which was aired in Taiwan in 2001. The drama was such a hit, setting off waves of ratings. Due to its popularity, the following year, Barbie together with the other cast of MG, filmed the sequel with parts of it shot at Barcelona, Spain.
Meteor Garden became also a mega hit in many parts of Asia and as well in some parts of Europe. In the Philippines, Meteor Garden remains the highest rated Asian drama. And because of that popularity, Barbie with Dee together with MG co-stars Vanness Wu and Ken Chu visited the Philippines on September 2003 for a concert entitled, The Event. The arrival of the Hsu sisters at the airport, with hordes of screaming fans welcoming them, was considered as a phenomenon. Reports said that no other foreign artist had made such frenzy until them. Not so long after their first visit, Barbie and Dee and now with Jerry Yan and Vic Zhou came back to the Philippines for the Happy 50 TV celebration of ABS-CBN, the network which aired MG.
Since then, Barbie started focusing on her acting career. She then filmed the ancient drama, A Chinese Ghost Story then, Monkey King (Quest for the Sutra) followed by Say Yes Enterprise. In 2004, Barbies acting skills was put on a challenge when she accepted the lead female role for Mars, opposite, her co-star in MG, Vic Zhou. The drama was voted Favorite Drama of the Year at the 40th Annual 2005 Golden Bell Awards, and was the highest rated program in 2005 when it aired on the Philippine network QTV.
In the year 2005, Barbie participated in another drama, The Phantom Lover. She also then filmed the horror flick, The Ghost Inside which earned her a 7 million NTD as paycheck. During that same year, Barbie published a beauty book titled, Beauty Queen/美容大王. The book featured self-help beauty tricks which Barbie recommended. It was such an instant hit in both Taiwan and Mainland China and gained the top slot in the best-selling lists. It is even considered the most influential published beauty book in China. During this time, Barbie reportedly earned nearly 40 million dollar. Also at this time, Barbie became Avon China's newest endorser, earning a 10 million NTD deal. Barbie also won over Zhang Ziyi to endorse high end Swiss watch brand Tissot. To this day, she is still the sole female Asian celebrity endorser of Tissot.
In 2006, Barbie landed a role in the movie Silk. The film was featured at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, which was attended by the cast including Barbie. Also during this year, Barbie made another idol drama, together with Show Lou, Corner With Love. The drama was released the year after. In 2007, Barbie published a book two of her Beauty Queen. She also then made a photo book named, Barbie Essence. Also during this year, after a year resigning from 100% Ent., Barbie and Dee collaborated once again for another hosting stint. They hosted DaXiao Ai Chi, a cooking-gossip talk show. In 2008, the show was halted to an end.
When the year 2008 came, Barbie started filming movies after another movie. She first filmed My So-Called Love. The role in the movie was considered as one of the most daring she ever took upon. She then also started filming a HK produced film, Connected. Later that year, together with Dee, Patty Hou, and Tao Zi, Barbie hosted the Golden Melody Awards. She again lent her hosting skills, together with good friend Blackie/Hei Ren, with the premiere of the dance show, Dance Avenue.
Not so long after, "Connected" premiered and took 300 Million HK Dollars at the box-office in just four days. Many netizens and critics observed Barbies great acting in the movie. And not surprisingly, the following year, at the Hong Kong Film Awards, Barbie was nominated in the Best Actress category.
Also in 2009, Barbie started filming a movie, Future X-Cops, with her idol, Andy Lau. While FXC was still in post-production, Barbie made another movie, On His Majestys Secret Service together again with her co-star in Connected, Louis Koo. This film gained again an impressive score at the box-office.
Still in 2009, Barbie accepted a role for another idol drama, Summers Desire. She was also announced as the Asias Sexiest Vegetarian of 2009 by PETA. During her 33rd birthday, Barbie started filming yet another movie, the all-star cast film, Hot Summer Days. The following month, Barbie was casted in a new movie under the helm of acclaimed director, John Woo, in a movie, titled Reign Of Assassins with international martial arts superstar Michelle Yeoh.
In early 2010, two of Barbies movie premiered in cinemas, Hot Summer Days and FXC. She was also declared as the higest paid actress and the higest earning actress. During March of this year, Barbies wax figure at the Madame Tussauds was unveiled. Also of that month, Barbie bagged the Best Actress for Taiwan award in the Channel V Awards. The month after Barbie accepted another ancient comedy role in the movie, Dragon Shop opposite Richie Chen.
May 30, 2010, Barbies much-anticipated idol drama piloted in Taiwan via CTV. The month after, Reign Of Assassins cast including Barbie walked the red carpet for the opening ceremony of the Shanghai Film Festival.
