Midpoint check in for Secret Garden
I know I have not done the episode highlights for Secret Garden yet, something I have only started doing recently and now have only done for Secret Garden, I just want to take a break to check in at this midpoint to talk a bit more about the drama.
The episode 10 of Secret Garden just aired, I have been thinking, what is it about this drama that it was only just a name but now has almost become everything to my drama world, and I can seriously call myself a Secret Garden Fan-atic. There must be something about it.
I thought about how it all began. The castings, not that smooth to start with. Jang Hyuk was originally casted to play Kim Joo Won, there was a rumor that Jay Park was casted to play the rookie singer Sun. At the end, none of them joined the drama due to issues related to their agency (politics!). Then the news came out, Hyun Bin confirmed his appearance in early September, joining Ha Ji Won in Secret Garden who confirmed her contract around late July. As how it turned out, this is how we have both leads for Secret Garden today. To be honest, now, I cant imagine anyone else playing Joo Won and Ra Im except Hyun Bin and Ha Ji Won, kind of glad this is what happened.
After the casting settled, we did not hear much news until October when some stills were released to the public. It was still not a big hit yet, to be honest the concept of the drama is a bit hard to grasp. Only information we know was that it was a fantasy drama, ok, what kind? Oh, it is about soul exchange, ok, and? Except the big names we are familiar with, not much interest was created around this drama.
Then on Nov 13, it hit the screen with a rating at around 16% and now after 5 weeks the rating rose to almost 27%, the love for this drama just keeps increasing and what attracts people to it?
I watch this drama for simple reasons, to be entertained and to be surprised. And of course something I do not need to mention, for the love of Hyun Bin, Ha Ji Won and Yoon Sang Hyun, now I have extended that love to Kim Sa Rang, Philip Lee and even Lee Jung Suk. Ha, isnt this the entire casts? Yes, this is my point, there is no one in the drama that I hate or dislike, even with some love triangles and a crazy mom, they each has a place in this drama. As Hyun Bin mentions in one of the interviews that the mood on set is as good as on cameras.
Writer Kim Eun Sook brings surprises to viewers every week, in the way that I never thought is possible. Yet they bring us the interesting characters, witty lines, hilarious scenarios and fantastical settings. Why not, dramas or movies are not just limited real life, sometimes it needs to stretch imaginations and brings us to places beyond here and now.
Director Shin Woo Chul gives us the visual extravaganzas, not a blockbuster style but every detail is taken care of and every scene is beautifully shot. He might be a perfectionist, as the sit-up scene took more than 4 hours with hundreds of sit-ups before getting a perfect take, but it turned out great.
I may not have covered everything and it may appear a bit random, just a few quick thoughts that came to my mind. Now I have to go and work on the episode highlights
