All Secret Garden fans agree … “Even a happy ending will be sad, Secret Garden.”
With only 3 episodes left out of 20 episode SBS weekend drama ‘Secret Garden’, fans are looking forward to a happy ending.
Up till episode 16, a tragic ending seems inevitable, whether it’s the ‘Ha Ji Won Jinx’, where characters in Ha Ji Won’s earlier works either die or endure suffering equivalent to death, or the Little Mermaid story between Kim Ju Won (Hyun Bin) and Ra Im (Ha Ji Won), or director Lim Jong Su (Lee Philip)’s danger warning about doing car stunts, or the soul of Ra Im’s dad (Jung In Ki) saying how glad he is that Ra Im missed the ‘Dark Blood’ audition.
From the recent spoiler and preview of episode 17, revealing how Ra Im gets into a car accident during stunt filming and goes into a coma, Hyun Bin’s crying scenes and the appearance of the words ‘disappearing like bubbles’, the drama goes contrary to the hopes of Secret Garden fans, leading to questions of whether all these are building up to a sad ending.
Especially in episode 7, where Ah Young described her dream where ‘you (Ra Im) and the CEO (Ju Won) were in a car speeding off to somewhere. The skies were looming with darkness, the CEO was crying while you continued to sleep”, this was interpreted ominously as ‘Ra Im going into a deep coma after her car accident, so Ju Won aims to save her through a soul change by bringing her to a place that rains.”
In episode 17 aired on Jan 8, the ending went as interpreted above, where Ju Won drives a brain-dead Ra Im into a place that will rain in a bid to save her, many sighed in relief, commenting that “with 3 episodes left, even if both go through an interchanging of souls, Ju Won will be able to re-awake while in Ra Im’s body and there will be a happy ending”, “Even if the drama ended with episode 17, it could still be regarded as one of the greatest dramas of all time, but since that wasn’t the case, the strategy of the drama seems to work towards a happy ending”.
One should note that in episode 17 just before her accident, Ra Im was told of Ah Young’s dream, where “there was a prettily decorated table in the middle of a white glittering snowfield. At the table, you and the CEO were seated and drinking tea – a totally pretty flower tea… While drinking the tea, red rose petals fell from the sky like raindrops. It looked really wonderful” Like her earlier dream which was realised as Ju Won drives Ra Im to a rainy place, fans are interpreting this dream that Ra Im will awaken from her coma.
Fans also referred to writer Kim Eun Sook’s earlier works and are confidently assuring themselves, “Do not worry. Kim writer-nim is always about happy endings. She wouldn’t write a sad ending this time, surely. In ‘Lovers in Prague’, ‘On Air’, ‘Lovers’, ‘City Hall’, all of them were able to reunite in their love in the end.”
They also said, “Rather than an outstanding and great sad ending, it seems better to have a happy ending even if it’s a little disappointing. Frankly it’s much more difficult to make a happy ending than a sad one, but even if a happy ending is completed with less perfection it will still be satisfying. We have faith in you, writer-nim!” which sounds somewhat like a threat.
In episode 17, Ah Young also said this about her dream – “Besides you and the CEO, there was one more person. But I can’t figure out who that person is.” This led to worried speculations that “maybe both of them died and met with Ra Im’s dad”. However, it’s unlikely that as Ra Im’s best friend, Ah Young would not easily recognize her dad’s face, and since she had seen Ju Won’s mother before, there are guesses that “he might be Ju Won’s grandfather”, symbolising that both will receive the blessings of his family. Some even hope that the unknown person may be ‘Ddol-Taeng Junior’ (child of ‘Kim Ddol Chu’ Kim Ju Won and Gil ‘Taeng Ja’ Gil Ra Im).
A more bizaare prediction with reference to Writer Kim’s 2004 drama ‘Lovers in Paris’ where everything was just a dream of Kang Tae Young (Kim Jung Eun) suggests that “everything is part of Oska (Yoon Sang Hyun)’s music video, but fortunately that would still be a happy ending.”
Despite the desire for a happy ending, fans agree that “what’s more heartbreaking than a sad ending is that Secret Garden will end next week. Even if there’s a happy ending, it will be sad that Secret Garden has ended.”
