His life changed when he joined acting class in high school after being encouraged by his upperclassman. Hyun Bin said, I resolved to go an actors way, but my father really disliked it. Since there were many outstanding, talented women and also a cousin who graduated from the prestigious S University in our family, my father could not accept my decision, and his objection was so serious that he didnt allow me to leave the house.
When asked how he changed his fathers tenacious mind, Hyun Bin said, I was once harshly beaten when I got caught secretly taking acting classes. My father beat me, allowing me to only wear underwear, with a baseball bat, but accidentally hit me in my knee. He was sorry that he beat me in my knee, so he gave me a chance to apply for Chung-Ang Universitys Department of Theatre. After I got accepted into the department, my father did not say anything anymore.
Hyun Bin also disclosed his unique hobby. He said, My mother made many opportunities for me. At an age when boys would be learning Taekwondo, my mother sent me instead to swimming, piano, and calligraphy classes. He also added, When I was young, I was able to play any music as soon as I heard it, but now, I cant since I forgot how to.
