Female fans weep as K-stud Hyun Bin joins the Marines

Actor and model Hyun Bin was inducted into the Korean marine corps on Monday after saying thanks to several thousand mostly female fans who showed up to send him off.
Hyun thanked his fans, including some who came from Japan and Hong Kong for the event, with a deep bow and a few words:
Ever since last year, Ive received a vast amount of love and support that I cant handle on my own. I dont know how to repay it all back. Ill make sure to spend my two years wisely to repay all the love that I am receiving right now.
Hyun, who was already a pretty hot commodity, shot up to super-stardom on the strength of his performance in the hit television drama Secret Garden last year.
By volunteering for the marines, Hyun bypassed a much easier way of fulfilling his military service requirement:
When celebrities enter the military, they are usually dispatched to the public relations division and act in military propaganda films. But Hyun opted not to take that path and applied instead as a combat soldier in the Marines, a branch of the military notorious for its tough training and discipline.
The marines are considered by far the most difficult of Koreas military services, but they also have a must stronger esprit de corps than the other services, with active associations across Korea. While the Korean army is staffed primarily by conscripts, the marine corps only accepts about one out of every four people who volunteer to serve in it.
In a bow to modern tradition, Hyuns joining the military was accompanied by a break-up with his girlfriend, actress Song Hye-kyo. A joint statement released soon after Hyun started basic training mentions other factors:
Due to their busy filming schedules, they are apart more often than they are together. In addition, the excessive amount of attention from the media and false rumours that they split put a lot of pressure them.
They could not overcome these obstacles and eventually agreed to part ways.
Although the release does not specifically mention Hyuns military service, there is a tradition of young couples breaking up when the man begins his mandatory military service or within a few months of his joining. It is common for female college students to date a pre-military boy for a while, break up when he joins the military, and then upgrade to an older and more mature boyfriend who is returning from his military service.
No doubt some lucky actress will upgrade to Hyun once he completes his stint in the marines.
