Big Names in Japan, China Support SMAP Concert in Beijing JIJI PRESS
Beijing, Aug. 16 (Jiji Press)--A number of political and business heavyweights from Japan and China are backing a concert by Japanese boy band SMAP in Beijing on Sept. 16, it was learned Tuesday.
They include former State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan, Chinese Ambassador to Japan Cheng Yonghua, Japanese Minister for Economy, Trade and Industry Banri Kaieda, Japanese Ambassador to China Uichiro Niwa and Fujio Mitarai, former chairman of the Japan Business Federation.
The concert has a strong political implication, as it is seen as a milestone in Sino-Japanese cultural ties and an opportunity to improve the deteriorated public image of each country ahead of the 40th anniversary of the diplomatic normalization between the two countries next year, a person involved in the event said.
On Tuesday, Takuya Kimura, the most popular member of SMAP, held a news conference for media and fans alike at a Beijing hotel.
"Japan is on its way to recovery thanks to the support of the Chinese people," Kimura said.
