Last Wednesday night, we found this message on my first grader sons schools emergency message board (Because of the destruction by tsunami, his elementary school is now borrowing spaces from another school nearby):
1) This Sunday, August 21, at 3 pm, so-and-so are coming to a facility in the city college. 2) This is a meeting for students and parents/guardians from the 2 schools whose campus was destroyed by the Tsunami and had to share campus with another school. Please be sure to keep this information confidential. If information about this meeting leaks out and fans start rushing in, we may have to cancel the event.
We got this message that included an order to keep our mouths shut. Moreover the group who is supposed to visit us appeared in Music Station two days before the event.
While watching Music Station, I thought to myself, These people, are they really coming the day after tomorrow? Hey, hey, for real? I started doubting it while watching the show.
I went to the event facility this afternoon.
Indeed all the parents/guardians had their doubts about the authenticity of this meeting. Is this just an event for 24 hour TV? Is it only celebrity look-alikes who are coming?
We asked the elementary school teachers and they didnt seem to know any details.
And then
finally the clock strikes 3, they have arrived!
It really was the real thing
.sorry for doubting you
.
This group was
SMAP!!!
It didnt matter that idol era was at its peak when I was younger, frankly I have no interest in idols.
But, SMAP
.of course I know of their existence, but even when I see them on TV, for me they were just like
Before we got married, my wife had gone to their concert 4 times, so she looked extremely happy to see them here. She kept snapping pictures of them with her phone.
I was just happy. The national top idols were fulfilling their duty in these tough times. They came all the way out to the rural areas just to meet the elementary school children and their parents. Furthermore they have made not only the children but also the parents happy. I really got first hand experience in seeing what a wide range their popularity expands to as top idols. When you think about it, they have been around in us parents lives longer than the childrens. For sure the cheer for them was louder coming from the parents. Right after the earthquake, Japanese people were repeatedly praised from all over the world for their composure and behavior. However today we kept getting a little too excited and sometimes had to be warned by the staffs to behave. In this sense, we see the greatness of SMAP.
All the members have great presence. They are great guys. They really showed how much they think about and care about the victims of the earthquake. Their thoughts and care had gotten through to us.
Laughing, cheering
I am sure there were people, who have lost their family, their home, their job, and their everyday lives, had a chance to forget all about the burdens they carried since that fateful day for one small moment.
What made me felt the most relieved today was to see the 4-year-old M-chan, who lost both her parents in the Tsunami, laughed from the bottom of her heart. Seeing SMAP is really healing~ I thought to myself.
At the end of the event SMAP sang Original Smile and Sekai de Hitotsu Deke no Hana.
After that, they shook hands with the school children and the parents.
While carrying my 4-year-old son, I said to each member, Thank you for all your support. We will definitely rebuild. Nakai-kun said, Otou-san*, do your best. So I shook his hand and said, When we finish rebuilding, please come visit again. I will never forget the strength I feel from each of their handshakes. SMAP, we will definitely succeed in reconstruction! We will show you!
I am thankful to those who have planned and made happen this support event, even though all of Japan was in this 24 hour TV mood. This may be a bother to some, even though it is unbecoming of my age I will root for SMAP from now on.
I am really grateful of the fact that there was no media people around, and that it is a quiet support event, not a publicity stunt.
To live in a disaster shelter is an unbelievable event in my life, but it is even more unbelievable to have the chance to meet SMAP, talk to them, and shake hands with them.
Along with this Great Earthquake and other major future incidents in my life, I have gained another great story to pass onto my future grandchildren.
*Otou-san = Dad
