Deep Rooted Tree chosen as best drama of 2011
By Nam Ji-en, Culture Correspondent When asked as part of our end-of-the-year review what the best drama on TV in 2011 was, eight of nine producers with the big three terrestrial stations and cable TV channels chose SBSs Deep Rooted Tree. SBS producer Song Jeong-hyeon, who produced Protect the Boss, which concluded in September, said Deep Rooted Tree perfectly combined quality and popular appeal. Park Jun-hwa, the producer of tvNs Rude Miss Young-Ae, liked how the drama showed the inner tension within King Sejong the Great, whom Koreans called seonggun, or good and wise king. Considering that Jang Hang-jun, who produced SBSs Sign, jokingly chose his own work, it was virtually unanimous. MBCs hit drama The Greatest Love didnt get even one vote.
The praise for Deep Rooted Tree didnt end here. Five chose actor Han Suk-kyu, who played King Sejong, as best actor of the year. Song Jung-gi, who portrayed the king as a youth in the drama, also got a vote. Gwak Jeong-hwan, who produced KBS 2s Chuno, said Han created with his outstanding expressiveness a king who was most interesting while at the same time sober and serious. Park Hong-gyun of The Greatest Love, who chose Song, said he didnt get much screen time, but he surprised audiences with his rich acting. The Greatest Loves Cha Seung-won earned two votes and Park Min-young of SBSs City Hunter got a vote.
Cha soothed some of The Greatest Loves disappointment by being selected as the best character. His character, Dokko Jin, who was harsh but quietly kind, earned one more vote than King Sejong, played by Han.
Protect the Boss was selected as the drama the most exceeded expectations, getting three votes. KBS 2s Dream High, The Princesss Man and Sign each got a vote.
Dramas that failed to meet expectations included MBCs Light and Shadow, currently airing; and MBCs Miss Ripley, which concluded in July. Both received two votes. MBCs You Fall in Love with Me and City Hunter were seen as disappointing, getting a vote each.
Song Jung-gi was selected as the most anticipated actor of the coming year thanks to his acting and good looks, getting three votes. Lee Je-hun, whose drama experience is limited entirely to a supporting role in last years SBS drama Three Sisters, came in second with two votes thanks to his role in the film The Front Line. Mun Chae-won of KBS 2s The Princesss Man, Kim Su-hyeon of KBS 2s Dream High, and Jeong Yu-mi of SBSs A Thousand Days Promise each got a vote, and as a senior actor, Yun Je-mun, who played Jeong Gi-jun in A Deep Rooted Tree, got a vote.
