The King’s Clown, Lee Joon Gi, is back. He was lost during most of his teen years, he met his heyday in his 20s and he was released from the army in his 30s. Because of this, the Lee Joon Gi who stood in front of his fans after his 20 months of service seemed to be completely different.
He was called a flower boy for his bright smile, but now he’s changed. His features have become sharper, and his eyes shine brighter. His aura also seems different. Lee transformed from a boy to a man, and now he’s aiming to launch a successful second phase of his life in his 30s.
I am
Lee is a man from Gyeongsang, and spent his school days in Changwon and Pusan. He moved to Seoul and started living with his acquaintance, Robert Holley, with the sole purpose of becoming an actor. During the day he went around looking for a management company, and at night he worked at a pub.
He then moved to a rooftop home, and had to endure long cold nights in the winter when his boiler broke down, along with rats and cockroaches in the summer. Although his situation was far from comfortable, he grit his teeth and endured to fulfill his dream of becoming an actor.
Lee finally made it into the Seoul Institute of the Arts. Entering college, however, was only the beginning. He fell short in hundreds of auditions, and continued to stumble. But then came a chance. He finally started off his career with the Japanese film Hotel Venus in 2004.
However, he continued to appear only as supporting roles and extras, and there seemed to be no end to his hardships. Soon Lee met a turning point in his life. That was his meeting with the film King and the Clown in 2005.
King and the Clown wrote a page in Korean film history by breaking the record for the film that gathered the most moviegoers ever, with a count of 10.5 million. Lee appeared as the seductive clown Gong Gil, and the role brought him immense fame. Lee was given all the credit as the reason the film was such a success. He was thought to have fit perfectly the epicene role of Gong Gil with his pretty looks.
His success with King and the Clown, however, didn’t mean he was a top star for life. He failed to mark more successes with his following pieces, and was deemed to be a one-piece wonder. But Lee continued quietly on his way.
He tried to look back on his original mindset by making a special appearance in the film May 18, a film about the Gwangju Protests for democracy. In the drama Time Between Dog and Wolf he showed his passion by acting in all of the action scenes himself, and in Iljimae he succeeded in recording 30 percent viewership ratings with his own brand of sure-handedness. Finally in Hero, he made a big comeback, delivering his own message toward society.
Lee continued to be pushed into the spotlight by being cast as the partner of Korea’s biggest actresses Kim Tae Hee and Kim Hee Sun. He was to act with Kim Tae Hee in the film Grand Prix, and with Kim Hee Sun in the drama Faith. It was suddenly announced, however, that he was to enter the army, which pulled him out of both pieces. The King’s Clown was set to become the Nation’s Soldier.
Charm
Lee Joon Gi isn’t famous just for his looks. He has a charm that can’t be explained in words along with unique visuals. These factors helped him build up his own spectrum of acting.
Thanks to this, he was able to fit various characters in his own way and with his own charms, from those in traditional dramas to modern ones, from an epicene clown to a modern day playboy. Whatever role he acted in, actors who took on similar roles had to have Lee Joon Gi’s example shoved in front of them. His influence was strong.
Lee’s fans were the first to recognize his strengths. He boasts a fandom that doesn’t fall behind those of any idol group. The age of the members of his fan club range from those in their teens to women in their 50s, and they also come from all over the world.
His unique looks and profound acting helps him bring in the love of his fans regardless of whether the piece is a success or not. The drama My Girl was popular across Japan, and King and the Clown was also successful there.
The Korea-Japan collaborative film Virgin Snow also proved Lee’s popularity, staying on the top of Japan’s box office for six weeks in a row. Lee’s pieces had not only Japan, but also Asia, rippling with excitement and this helped him clear a spot for himself as a hallyu star.
The love of his fans didn’t falter even after he entered the army. His fans showed their concern when he lost 7-8kg soon after he entered the army, and Lee cut his forehead during a rehearsal for the military musical Voyage of Life. Fans openly showed their support, sending him Chinese medicine, samgyetang, pizza and even bottles of water.
Their love also showed at Lee’s release on February 16. His release event was attended by 2,000 fans, four times the number that gathered for his entrance. Many of those fans had stayed up all night in front of the venue. Some even said that he had probably gathered the most fans ever in the history of celebrity releases.
Lee repaid his fans by showing his thanks to each and every fan that visited his mini homepage, and worked hard to get closer to them by holding fanmeetings inside and outside of Korea. On the day of his release, he held a fanmeeting with his fans to thank them for waiting.
Crisis
Lee had some trouble with his agency. In 2008, he was sued for 500 million won from his former agency, which said that he had breached the terms of their contract. The civil suit led to a criminal suit, barring Lee from continuing with his career. The suit seemed to be headed for the long-term when Lee filed a counterclaim, but both sides soon withdrew their charges to put an end to the legal dispute.
Lee left his former agency, which he had stayed with for 10 years, and found JG Company. Soon after, however, he suddenly had to enter the army, and so he had to leave his manager yet again.
Just before his release, he met another crisis when it became known that he had engaged in commercial activities as a soldier. The Ministry of Defense found fault with how he had started recording for his album and had sold tickets for 30,000 won each while he was still serving.
He was also involved in love rumors with the former Miss Korea, Yoo Ri Ah.
