Jokwon speaks up on his killer heels

2AM's Jokwon has made his solo debut, after eight years as a trainee and four years as part of a group. Perhaps because of this, he has taken the unprecedented step of challenging the limits of the entertainment industry. Just as the thought "He stuck to it for eight years because he wanted to show off his talent?" sprung up every time Jokwon made an appearance, the words "Jokwon is indeed strong" flashes across one's mind automatically this time.
Jokwon has poured all his determination and will into his solo debut, going one step further to show us a unique performance that only he can pull off.
Most shocking to the viewers is the visual aspect of his performance. The entertainment-dol who used to dance cute girl group moves is now gone. Instead, Jokwon took to the stage in a costume adorned with gold feathers, black skinny jeans and killer heels. Yep, "kill heels," a word associated with girl groups, made an appearance in his performance.
The shoes themselves are striking -- at 19.5cm, without an actual heel, and with studs embedded all over. It is clear that Jokwon wanted to create a performance that viewers could also enjoy watching, and not just listening to.
Jokwon wore the killer heels even during his practice sessions.
Just hearing about it is enough to make you understand why it's called "killer" heels. He said, "I participated in almost every part of this album. Producer Bang Shihyuk took a lot of my opinions into consideration in song selection; he trusted me quite a bit. I thought of the idea of wearing killer heels for an "animal" feel, and had many meetings with the visual team on this. After all, I have to be doing what I enjoy in order to express it properly on stage."
When asked if wearing the killer heels made him understand the pains that girl groups go through, he answered, "This is higher than what girl groups usually wear. It's something really difficult to attempt. But it's more comfortable than I thought it would be? Haha. There isn't even a heel at the back. During practices I had to focus completely in order to avoid falling. It's something I'm going to wear only for the first week after my solo debut, so I only hope I don't get hurt."
Jokwon's ambition and pride regarding his being the "first male singer" in pushing the limits stands out. "My limit? To tell the truth, till now I don't know where that is, what percentage I'm at, and how much further I can go in future. I always think about how I can go about doing something in the best way and see it to the end. I complain a lot about trivial things but always make sure I see it to the end. Perhaps if I had given up in the middle of something I would know where my limit is, but till today I've never given up on anything," he commented. That's precisely it -- the kind of attitude that saw this young man to the end of eight years as a trainee.
Jokwon added with confidence, "After this album, I hope to hear things like 'Just like Jokwon'. 'Leading-edge Jokwon, or artist,' and 'A performance that only Jokwon can pull off.'" For him, choosing to walk in such a shocking direction, the day when his name is prefixed by the word 'artist' is surely not too far off.
