Jo Kwon’s true colours By nstent@nst.com.my
K-Pop boy band 2AM leader, Jo Kwon, sheds the balladeer persona and shows off his true character in his first solo album
ALONG with his members, Jo Kwon, the leader of K-Pop boyband 2AM, boasts an angelic voice, which perfectly suits the group’s balladeer persona.
For his first solo album I’m Da One, however, Jo Kwon makes a 180-degree turn with a total makeover, starting from his looks to his genre of music.
From tailored suits and a smart appearance, the 23-year-old has transformed into a fun-loving man with flashy outfits (and sometimes, 19cm platform shoes) to go with the album’s concept.
Besides producer Bang Si Hyuk, he also worked with Swedish DJ Avicii and singer-songwriter Lauren Dyson to craft a new sound different from 2AM’s.
The song titles for the whole album are in English. His first single, also titled I’m Da One, is an upbeat dance number with a whole lot of Jo Kwon’s flavour in it, while Animal is an electronic club track.
“For Animal, I had to wear killer heels to perform. It has created a huge sensation in Korea and internationally,” says Jo Kwon, adding that he received praise for this by Beyonce’s choreographer Jonte Moaning.
The platform shoes may be a little too much, but it suits his image for the song. He says: “They were actually quite comfortable. It hurt at first when I was practising but after a few times, I felt fine.”
This sudden and in-your-face change certainly surprised his fans, but he wants to introduce this other side of him.
“I am charismatic and fun. This is my true self. In terms of music, I prefer songs with more charisma,” he says.
The album also includes an English song Just A Kiss, which is dedicated to his international fans, and a track called Something ‘Bout You featuring bandmate Jung Jin Woon.
“There are a lot of musicians who participated in the making of this album, both Korean and international artistes. For I’m Da One, we got an international choreographer to work with me on the stage performance. For Animal, I worked with the very famous DJ Avicii. I have worked very hard for this album and I am very grateful that it involved many talented musicians.”
Below, Jo Kwon tells us more about his career.
You’ve acted in a sitcom, All My Love. Do you have plans to act in a drama or movie? I would like to act in a drama. If there’s any acting opportunity in the future, I will definitely take up the offer.
Fans here miss you and other 2AM members. Any plans to visit Malaysia again? We would love to come back. We often reminisce about the good times we had in the country but there are no plans to visit yet. However, we will definitely return to Malaysia in the future. So I hope that our fans will wait for us.
Who do you look up to as an artiste? Park Jin Young (founder of his talent agency JYP Entertainment) and Korean female singer, Uhm Jung Hwa. She has been in the industry for a long time and is my role model for being a versatile artiste who sings and acts. I want to be like her.
Who would you like to collaborate with? Lee Hyori, Ga-In (Brown Eyed Girls) and Uhm Jung Hwa. For foreign artistes, Lady Gaga will be my top pick. Other than that, in Europe there’s an artiste called Kardaski who also performs in high heels.
Just A Kiss is a song for your international fans. Since English isn’t your main language, how was the recording process? The most difficult thing was the pronunciation. There was a teacher to help me in the recording room. But because it was in English, it was difficult in terms of expression.
What is your life’s motto? “Keep going”. It helps me a lot as I chase my dreams, from being a trainee for seven years to where I am now.
During the filming of the music video and recording of songs, did anything interesting happen? There was a wire scene (where I was strapped to a harness and lifted into the air). It was my first time so it took a long time to complete. It was painful too! This whole album is very important to me, so I recorded I’m Da One many times just to perfect it.
What do you miss most about 2AM when you are promoting solo? I miss them most when I am in the waiting room. I also feel lonely whenever I am on stage by myself.
