Horse Doctor: The Equation Behind The Success of 'Horse Doctor' and Director Lee Byung-hoon
MBC Horse Doctor has held its dominance of the Mon-Tues drama scene once again, recording 14.6% and much ahead of its closest contender Ohlala Couple of 9.3%.
Despite the worries of the drama being the same old Lee Byung-hoon historicals, Horse Doctor has continued its dominance after it wrestled it away from its challengers. Despite the undeniable influences of the director Lee Byung-hoon, Horse Doctor has managed to escalate the cliches of Lee Byung-hoon to its own charms.
1. The social movement from down to top
The first factor in the dramas of director Lee Byung-hoon is the social mobility of the protagonists. Hur Jun and Dae Jang Geum has all portrayed the ascent of the l:-) protagonists to the higher classes, with the protagonists effort and perseverance paving the way for their success. The last episode of the drama showed Kwang-hyun (Jo Seung-woo) pledging to become not the horse doctor, but the human doctor, and his challenge to the medical examination.
But the efforts of the protagonists are preceded by their talent. Kwang-hyun has been an accomplished doctor in his horse doctor days, who dazzled Ji-nyeong (Lee Yo-won) with his amazingly accurate acupuncture skills, despite him not having done so before on humans.
2. The Helpers
A strong plot would be impossible without the presence of the helpers. The helpers of the protagonists, who helps the protagonists out wordlessly and with opportunities are the essential factor of the equation.
Ji-nyeong is the most eminent helper among Kwang-hyuns way, who helps Kwang-hyun during his efforts in examinations, and forms a romance with him on top of it. Ko Joo-man (Lee Soon-jae), an official in the Ministry of Rites in the court, is a believer in talent over ones bloodline, and places his trust in Kwang-hyun with eliminating the limit on talent in medical examinations.
In-joo (Yoo Seon), who came to know Kwang-hyun in the last episode, is also a likely helper, being the one who knows about Kwang-hyuns past and the secret behind his birth, and will likely take a central role in the development of the plot as well.
3. The lovely supporting actors
Another strength of the director Lee Byung-hoons dramas are the lively and lovely supporting casts, who liven up the drama with their various roles.
The most beloved supporting cast of the drama this time is Princess Sukhwi, played by Kim So-eun. A princess by birth, but falling in love with Kwang-hyun, her lovely advances to Kwang-hyun, despite the social gap between them, has brought many a smile to the viewers, skyrocketing the popularity of the character.
Ki-bae and Ja-bong (Lee Hwi-do and Ahn Sang-tae), the fellow horse doctors and Kwang-hyuns childhood friends, are another indispensable element in the drama as well. Ahn Sang-tae, a popular comedian, has capitalized on his expertise with his natural depiction of a smooth and comical character, adding his own spice into the blend of the dramas plot.
Horse Doctor, while it may be centered around cliches, nevertheless radiates an undeniable charm with its strong development and excellent cast, dominating the primetime drama scene of Monday and Tuesday nights. With Kwang-hyuns challenge to become the human doctor, it remains to be seen whether the drama can follow in the past successes of the director, but for the time being, it seems quite likely to do so.
