รอยเตอร์ก็ลงข่าวครับ Thai minister under fire over Olympic gold
BANGKOK, Aug 17 (Reuters) - A Thai cabinet minister defended himself on Tuesday for bringing home the first Olympic gold medal won by a Thai woman, saying he wanted to use it as a block to mint one for her in solid gold.
Chat rooms were filled with criticisms of Deputy Prime Minister Suwat Liptapallop, who is in charge of sports, after he came back from the Athens Olympics with the gold medal won by 53-kg weightlifter Udomporn Polsak.
Thai-language newspapers accused him of rushing to display the medal to powerful Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in hopes of gaining favour.
But Suwat, the medal in his hands, told reporters before a cabinet meeting that was all nonsense.
"She said she wanted a medal made of real gold and I am going to make one for her with my money," Suwat said.
He said the medal would weigh around 150 grammes and cost 100,000 baht (,400) to make.
The government and corporate sponsors have promised the 22-year-old Udomporn 15.4 million baht (1,200) and to take her into the Royal Thai Army as a lieutenant, her dream, when she comes back to Bangkok. (=41.49 baht)
