The Japanese Opera singer Yumiko Oshima will held a concert in Shizuoka, near Tokyo, to pay homage to Japanese late famous singer Hibari Misora, to Maria Callas and Leslie Cheung. Yumiko Oshima said that suring the summer of 2003 she attended a memorial event for Leslie Cheung in Japan and finally could watch 'Farewell my concubine' for the very first time, since until that day she only saw some part of this movie due to its length. That day she's been very touched by the scene where Leslie, with a damaged make up on his face, is surrounded by soldiers. She said she saw "the real beauty" in this upsetting scene. Few days after she watched Franco Zeffirelli's 'Callas Forever' by chance. Although the story was almost a fiction, in the movie Maria Callas' voice was true. Listening to 'Casta Diva' Oshima started to cry bitterly thinking that Callas decided to commit suicide. Then she read by chance a Hibari Misora's biography. She was a very popular singer in Japan. In the book there is an episode where Hibari's teacher Mr. Yamada (a classical music conductor and composer) told her: "You are a true artist". Hibari always kept in her mind this sentence to continue to live and sing. During that summer Oshima knew these artists and she felt touched by their life. She read a lot of books, watched a lot of DVDs, listened to a lot of CDs and found a lot of informations about them in two months. And she found they had something in common: they sang for all their life expressing all their talent, in a very serious way and putting heart into their work. So she had the idea to organise a concert to pay homage to these artists, since Oshima can sing Opera, popular songs and pop songs, also in Mandarin. The concert will be held on November 26, 2004 and it involves also other artists, dancers, a pianist and a director.
