But what really attracted me to him was his performance in the 'Days of Being Wild'. He so effortlessly presented to us a self-exiled, narcissistic and rebellious youth. In my opinion, he had sculptured the dispirited beauty of a youth of the 60s: so selfconsciously he threaded his steps to the record player; or so rudely kicked the passionate Carina Lau off the bed; or narcissistically asked Maggie Cheung in a low voice: "This one minute..." But in that mixture of self-confidence and self-assured, it contained a kind of extreme void and emptiness that would make our heart ache. Just watching him going to Manila to look for his birth mother, but his mother refused to see him. In that palm trees diameter, with his chest upright, he arrogantly turned around to depart, behind him one could feel that there was a pair of brilliant eyes piercing through the thick curtain, looking at his wound. That scene, once again confirmed the void, hurt and wound of a rebellious dispirited youth. 'Days of Being Wild' is the masterpiece of Wong Kar Wai, not perfect but makes people think deep of it. However, the abandonment and void of the 60s were fully and vividly reflected in Leslie's look, posture and behaviour, closely following James Dean's icon as a problematic youth.
