Get the thread from Thai mothers in Germany. My husband is Japanese living in Germany. I have 3 boys (4 in Germnan kindergarten, 3 this Aug and just 1 year old).
With my first boy I made a mistake. We spoke in English with him till almost 3 years old. He knew nothing of Thai language, but English and German (He went to minikindergarten since 1 1/2 years old.)
I took him and his younger brother (about 1 year old then) back to BKK for 6 months. I placed him in a kindergarten there.
Since then we have been spoken in Thai. My second son also speaks Thai as a first language. My first son has no problem with communication to his father, in English and German.
My second one can't communicate his thought 100% to his dad. He would try German first then English.
I feel terrible that they don't speak Japanese at all. It's totally my husband's fault. Anyway he is hardly there.
I'm afriad they might lose a chance to get into Japanese school in Frankfurt.
My kids r learning 4 languages and they speak a little bit behind compared to children at the same age.
If I could change, I would start with each parent speaks in mother tougue to the children. It's the best.
I met some Thai parent swho came to Germany when they were young themselves. Their children speak less Thai and more German then my children (who has only 1 parent speaking Thai)
My first child knows the differnce between language, what is German and where to speak. Daddy speaks Japanese and we speak Thai.
He can understand the same sentence in English, German and Thai ka.
Hope this help.
