Jamaican Blue Mountain is a type of coffee bean, one of the most expensive and sought-after coffees in the world. It comes from the Blue Mountains of Jamaica.
Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee is not a brand, but a recognized growing region in the Blue Mountain region monitored by the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board. The Blue Mountains are generally located between Kingston to the south and Port Maria to the north. Rising to 7500 feet, they are some of the highest mountains in the caribbean.
To be called Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee, the beans must be grown above 2000 feet. Coffee trees can be seen growing above 5000 feet throughout the region. The higher the elevation, the higher the quality and demand. The climate of the region is cool and misty with high rainfall. The soil is rich with excellent drainage. This combination of climate and soil is considered ideal for coffee.
The most sought after Blue Mountain Coffee is that which is roasted over an open fire in a pan. This must be bought directly from the growers in the Blue Mountains. The reward is watching them process and prepare the beans by hand for sale. Though offically the coffee must be bought through JCIB companies, private growers throughout the region offer coffee to travelers passing by.
Coffee connoisseurs describe Jamaica Blue Mountain as rich and flavorful, with low acidity, a hint of sweetness and a bold aroma.
A pound of this coffee in a coffeeshop generally costs around $45US. In Jamaica, you can expect to pay between $15-$25 per pound. If you are brave enough, you can buy it direct for $10-$20 from the local growers in the mountains. The road there is not for the faint hearted though. Cliffs along the road over 1000 feet are common around the upper regions of the area.
