คำตอบ FIP จาก Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital University of California at Davis

    Hi XXX,

I received the following reply to your inquiry from one of our faculty
veterinarians.  I hope that you find the information helpful:

Thank you for your question to the Veterinary Medical Teaching
    Hospital.
Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) is a disease where an indivdual
    cat's
immune system responds inappropriately and overaggressively to a very
common intestinal virus (enteric coronavirus) most kittens are exposed
    to
    early in life.

The teaching hospital's vaccination recommendations are posted at
www.vmth.ucdavis.edu, follow information for clients to protocols to
general health care for the specifics.  The information regarding FIP
    vaccine is as follows:

"The FIP vaccine is an intranasal modified live virus product. The
    efficacy
of this vaccine is controversial, and duration of immunity may be
    short,
although the vaccine appears to be safe. Although exposure to feline
coronaviruses in cat populations is high, the incidence of FIP is very
    low,
especially in single-cat households (where it is 1 in 5000). Most cats
    in
cattery situations where FIP is a problem become infected with
coronaviruses prior to 16 weeks of age, which is the age at which
vaccination is first recommended. Vaccination could be considered for
seronegative cats entering a cattery where FIP is common. We do not
routinely recommend vaccinating household cats with the FIP vaccine,
    and
the vaccine is not stocked by our pharmacy."

It would be very unlikely for the FIP vaccine, which is given directly
    into
the nose, to cause continuous watering from the nose over any period of
time.  I would attribute anything coming from the nose to another
    cause.
Initial concerns, years ago, about the potential for the FIP vaccine to
cause the actual FIP disease have been eliminated.  It's more a
    question of
    whether it does anything worthwhile.

To my knowledge, there is no other vaccine available for the prevention
    of FIP.

I hope this answers your question sufficiently!
