Dear Hataiwong,
Thanks for your e-mail. I am glad that you have prepared a pamphlet to give information on caring for pet rabbits.
I am an Australian retired and living in Chiang Mai near the University and I have 11 pet rabbits that are between 1 and 2 years of age. I started with 4 that I bought from the pet shop in Kham Tien market. The house is built on a area of 1/2 rai with a good fence around and the rabbits are in 5 separate enclosures as there are 4 males. They all get to run around the garden 2 or 3 times a week so I think they are lucky well fed and happy rabbits ! I used to work on many agricultural projects in Thailand and the Asian region.
I worked with Dean Theera of the Faulty of Agriculture on a project back in 1976. I was surprised to see a student carrying a rabbit around the Agricultural Fair The student said it was a new "Fancy Dwarf" breed. So I went to check it out. I was told that the young rabbits were 2 months old so I bought 2 to see if this was true. One died of diahorrea within a week but the other is nearly 500 grams weight and not a "Dwarf" and I thinkit will grow to over 2 kg in weight.
I am very upset that this is an organised group ( I think from Petburi) who are going around agricultural fairs and other festivals and cheating people and causing a lot of suffering to the young rabbits which are being taken from their mothers at 2 weeks of age. As you know they need their mothers mild until they are 5 weeks of age.
I would be happy to help in stopping this group. I think your approach of a leaflet on rabbit care ( and how to buy a rabbit ?) is a good start. I was told by the rabbit pet shop at Suan Buak Had that they will come back to try and sell baby rabbits at the flower festival at the beginning of February
Kind Regards
Peter Hoare
