Assumptions: 1. Your annual income is $48,000. 2. You are single. 3. You are a salaried employee. Means you are working for an American corporate. 4. For simplicity sake, you live in Illinois (tax rate is flat). 5. You contribute 5% of annual income towards retirement saving plan (401k or 403b)
Total deductions of your monthly paycheck will be: 1. Your federal income tax at 25% with a base of $4,090. Your tax bracket is $29,700 - $71,950. 2. Social Security at 6.2% (The total is 12.4%, your employer contributes the other half.), 3. Medicare at 1.45% (The total is 2.9%, your employer takes care the other half.), 4. State tax at flat rate of 3%, with personal exemption of $2,000, 5. Retirement saving plan (401 k/403b) contributions, 5%
With all parameters above, let's do the calculations: 1. Federal tax: = 4,090 + [(48,000 - 29,700) * .25] = 8,665/yr
2. FICA (SS + Medicare): = 48,000 * (.062+ .0145%) = 3,672/yr
3. State Tax: = 48,000 x .03 = 1,440/yr
Total Annual Tax = 8,665 + 3,672 + 1440 = $13,777.1/yr Monthly Tax = $1,148.1
4. Retirement Saving Plan (401k/403b) Contributions: = 48,000 *.05 = 2,400/yr = 200/month
Monthly Deductions(taxes & 401k) = 1,148 + 200 = $1,348
Notes: 1. This does not include monthly insurance premiums i.e. health + dental, accident and life. You do the math for the rest. 2. When you file tax each year you can use personal exempt as tax deductible, in this case $2,000 for Illinois state and $3,200 for federal.
