United Nations Development Program Award to be Presented to His Majesty the King
Secretary-General of the United Nations Kofi Annan will visit Thailand on May 25-27 to present the United Nations Development Program Award to His Majesty the King.
The award presentation is meant to honor His Majesty on the occasion of the 60th anniversary celebrations of his accession to the throne this year. It is also in recognition of His Majestys unswerving dedication for the better living conditions of the Thai people. His Majesty has initiated many development projects, which have brought progress and prosperity to the country throughout his 60 years on the throne.
The United Nations Development Program, or UNDP, is the UNs global development network, an organization advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience, and resources to help people build a better life.
Recognized as the Developer King, His Majesty the King has focused his attention on achieving sustainable development, as seen from many royally initiated projects. He emphasized that development must be carried out in stages and that it in fact relied on tradition. In his royal address on July 11, 1980, His Majesty said that in bringing about progress and prosperity, it is imperative to build up gradually, one step at a time, implementing measures, while contemplating and improving them. He urged people not to make the efforts with haste just for the sake of novelty. In fact, His Majesty said, nothing is really new and all novelties are just the continuation of the old.
In his another royal address made on July 26, 1984, His Majesty pointed out that when the base is complete and firm, people can start developing further, building on that base, working, developing and improving at the same time.
His Majestys principle is that development must take account of the local environment in terms of the geographical environment, the sociological environment, and the psychological environment.
