To khun Nuihahey, the reason that 'Dr. Koi' is exactly as Khun BF said in #21; but she is good anyhow. To Khun BF in #18, ranking based on job-mkt candidates is certainly an intriguing idea. Anyway, I feel that I didn't make myself clear and it appears that I mistakenly implied what I actually did not mean to about Chicago. By many standards, I think Chicago is definitely number one in the world. It's true that I said it may not be difficult to 'get in' to Chicago, but I think it is certainly VERY DIFFICULT to graduate from Chicago. I really, sincerely admire those Thais who have been able to 'graduate' from Chicago. They are high-quality economists. Once Steven Levine told me that "Chicago is like a crab, that can consume and translate low-class planktons to such scrumptious meat", in the same sense that Khun BF said in 14. I totally think the same way. But I am not sure that I know 'all' Chicago-graduated Thai PhD economists under 40. This forces me to exclude Chicago fromhere; that's all. Sorry for my insensitivity. Lastly, please note that my purpose here is NOT TO SHOW-OFF SCHOOL NAMES OR EVEN A SHOWCASE OF ANYTHING. In fact, this is simply a first step in my attempt to correct the perception among some Thai economic students about Mainstream economics Vs the so-called 'Alternative' economics school of thoughts. It appears that the Thai economic community gives too much recognition to the 'Alternative' economics school of thoughts. The fact is that the so-called 'Alternative' economics school of thoughts is not even economics. It is a big mistake for the Thai economic community to embrace such a thing. For one thing, this creates a misperception among Thai economic students that this 'Alternative' economics works and so might be a motivation for these young Thai students who still can choose many paths of life to pursue alternative economics. Big mistakes. Why? At least in terms of job opportunity. You may like the subject (alternative) and think it can do a lot of things, but in fact, NO ONE IN THE WORLD ACCEPT IT (except a very small group of people who have less and less influence). So if your ultimate goal in life is to get a job as an economic teacher in 'some' economic departments in Thailand and earns 20,000 a month, or pursuing alternative economics may be right for you. But if you want to 'expand' opportunity in your life, being able to try to apply and get a job at international organizations like IMF, the World Bank like ดร. วิรไท, ดร. เศรษฐพุฒิ or ดร. ปิติ or in private sectors and earn THB 700,000 a month like Dr POOK or even work in a highly-regarded policy-making institution, such as Bank of Thailand like ดร. สุรัช, the one and only one way to do this is TO GET A DEGREE FROM MAINSTEAM PHD ECONOMIC PROGRAM. Not neccessary to be those listed above. EVen those less prestigeous may do. BUT you virtually will have zero chance to get such good opportunities in life IF YOU PURSUE A DEGREE IN THOSE OBSCURE ALTERNATIVE ECONOMIC PROGRAMS. Again, the only thing that you can do is to come back and teach in 'some' economic dept in Thailand (or even worse unemployed altogether). And as many people here will know, to be prepared to apply to a good (mainstream) economic program, it takes a lot of preparation. If you study in Thailand, like Chula, TU or Nida, you may have to set goal and do something since the freshman year. But the fact that some people in Thai ecoonomic community misleadingly exaggerate the virtue of the alternative economics, actually have confused many young Thais. So they end up not sufficiently focus in their goal and when four years pass in their senior year, they realize that they cannot change anything even they wish they would like to do something different. *** The list above is simply want to show to some Thai students who still have a chance to set goal and do something with their life that getting a PhD in (mainstream) economics is an attractive option that they can pursue. And then if they really like this and thing PhD economics is right for them, WHAT IT TAKES that they need to accomplish that goal. And the list shows what kind of jobs those นักเศรษฐศาสตร์เลือดใหม่ของเมืองไทย get after they graduate with PHDs in (mainstream) economics from (mainstream) schools. This will be what young Thai students get as well if they succeed. (note that some people choose a wrong direction in life simply because they don't know all possible attractive paths to choose; this is simply an example of lfe paths that Thai economics students can choose) Oh and forget to mention to khun McPazzo; thanks for your comments. There are only two in the list that still in the US. I think it has no harm to spend a couple years in the state and then bring those experiences with you back to Thailand; the same as ดร. เศรษฐพุฒิ, ดร. ปิติ, ดร. วิรไท who worked in the US for a few years and now all back to Thailand. Enjoy talking with you all. Bye !
