Chinese language is in high demand. This is simply because:
1. With population of roughly 1.3 billions, it has immense pool of cheap labors. Couple with ever since its economic reform policy launched in late 1970s (1978 not too sure), its economy has been steadily growing. Consequently, it has transformed its people to be more prosperous (over 200 millions are lifted above the poverty line). When ones become more affluent, ones consume more. Thus, humongous market potential! Many big foreign companies poured their investments into China to take advantage of this economic miracle: immense pool of cheap labors and enormous market. China each year received the largest Foreign Direct Investments (FDI). Every body wants to do business with China!
2. China economy has been booming at an impressive growth rate at the annual rate of at least 9% and above- for over a decade. This year its annual growth rate is around 11%. Thise causes quite a concern to its government and others that it may be unsustainable and thus causes a burst.
3. This hence makes China one of the major economies in the world. Its economy will soon surpass the second largest economy, Japan.
4. China is now widely recognized in its economy powerhouse. It is now a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
5. China has expanded its economy beyond China and Asia. To prevent its ever-growing economic disruption, China has secured sources of supply for its thirst of natural resources and commodities i.e. oil, natural gas, copper, steel, cement etc. by establishing business deals with other continents e.g. South America (Chile, Venezuela, Brazil) and Africa. Its now the major investor in Africa.
6. Like the Japanese and Koreans, more and more affluent Chinese consume more including travel overseas for leisure as well as for foreign culture exposures.
It is natural that people want to learn to speak the language of up-coming and growing super economy powerhouse. During Japan economic boom from 1980s to early 1990s, every one was in search of learning Japanese.
Will Chinese language take over English? I think its unlikely because English is spoken in all over the glob e.g. North America, Great Britain, Australia/New Zealand, S. Asia, part of SEA, Asia and Africa. Beside it is the universal language of the Internet.
