Well, my personal example might be a rare case but I would not like everyone taking this quote; "ชีวิตค่อนข้างจะพลิกจากวิกฤตเป็นโอกาสได้มากกว่าจริงๆ นี่ผมพูดแบบ realistic ในโลกแห่งความเป็นจริงนะครับ", too seriously krub...
I don't believe that this qoute is strictly correct from my own experiences.
When I started my career in academia, I planned to study aboard in 2 years after starting. Two months later, IMF crisis struck!! Every plan was put on hold.
So with that crisis/opportunity, I spent four years as a university instructor before leaving for my PhD study.
Why I put "/opportunity" after the word crisis?
In those valuable 4 years, I was holding my MS degree from a Thai university. As you might know, during the IMF crisis, almost all of research budget was frozen... almost absolute zero!!
But, within the crisis, there were still need in our private sector needing someone to do some kinds of research. Luckily, there was this kind of need really closed to my field of interest.
So, I showed my interest towards that direction and those industries commissioned me to do the research....
I got 12 on-going research funding in that period of one and a half year---approximately 4.5 million Thai Baht.
From this financial support, there were 9 international publications.... The industries got what they wanted... So, basically, it was a win-win situation for both sides.
Although I felt reluctant to leave with this kind of skyrocketting career, I still believe that PhD is a way that I could be a better scientist/researcher.... (with a small fringe benefit of being a dog protection gear) :)
But the bottom line is; I would like to be a better teacher/scientist/researcher by a process within the PhD study, not aiming to have the three letter of PhD in front of my name....
There are a fine line between bragging and sharing.... I would like that my comments would be considered as the latter as my intention really is.
