The cheapest way is to buy a draft payable to you and send it by mail from Thailand. Then deposit the draft to your bank and it may need up to 30 days for clearing. However if the bank that issued that draft have a branch in USA it should be much faster. Anyway this is not the most convenient way to do it. It is just a possible way for a person who will open a/c later in USA.
The best way for you is to wire or electronic transfer directly to your bank account. You will need just routing number and your bank a/c number which is on your personal check. If the amount is higher than $10,000, then you need to fill up the form to explain why it has to be that big at Thai bank that you are making the transaction. This case you may need a copy of visa and passport or I-20. Go to any banks and ask for more information. Now every bank has very good IT system, and I think you can do it at almost all branches.
My sister just wired $8000 and she didnt need any things but bank routing number and my bank a/c number. She paid 500 B to SCB and 800 Baht to my US bank and then I can get $8000 in full in just 24 hours. I believe those 500 and 800 baht are fixed amounts no matter how much you need to wire.
