"ฝรั่ง: but if Thai people don't want people to question the king... then they shouldn't put people in jail... that is oppressive ฝรั่ง: does that make sense?"
-The man who was put in jail was not questioning the king he was only looking for a drink and made a stupid mistake which insulted a man the entire country loves and there are laws in place so this means that if you break a law you get punished, (same as in any country).
ฝรั่ง: to western people... it makes it look like the King is oppressive ฝรั่ง: Thai people love him... but people should be allowed to express their views ฝรั่ง: if they have to live in fear... then it becomes a dictatorship"
-It would only seem oppressive if the king was actually doing something wrong, the thai people are not stupid so they would realise if their king was not taking their best interests to heart and they would speak up against him. They dont love him simply because he is the king but because he has (almost) always only had the good of the country in mind. An oppressive king would need to control the population in order to maintain their love and adoration. The thai king doesnt do this. The thai people are allowed to express their views and in todays modern age anything that the king did wrong would be common knowledge both nationally and internationally and therefore the love for him would be diminished.
"ฝรั่ง: I know ฝรั่ง: but people think Thai people are brain-washed ฝรั่ง: indoctrinated ฝรั่ง: because ever since u have been born ฝรั่ง: all u have ever heard is good things about the king ฝรั่ง: all the media and information about the king is good ฝรั่ง: 2 possible reasons ฝรั่ง: 1. he is completely good ฝรั่ง: 2. no bad information is allowed"
-Its not that they are only hearing the good side of their king its that there is only a good side. Any bad information would of course spread to the entire country, you cannot hide it in todays society like you could 300 years ago. The thai people would definitely know if he had dome something wrong or even if he didnt have the countries best interests at heart. Believe it or not but he has actually been a good, loving king, whose best trait was the fact that he didnt interfere with the people governing themselves. Just like the Queen of England who never interferes with the politics of the country for fear of dividing it.
"ฝรั่ง: in Thailand... any negative information is punished ฝรั่ง: sooooooo... there is NO balance ฝรั่ง: u all think he is wonderful ฝรั่ง: but u have have VERY strong laws making sure that u all think he is wonderful ฝรั่ง: NO ONE is allowed to question him at all"
-There are no laws against spreading truthful information and even if there were in todays age it would be impossible for the information not to spread (at least outside of thailand so we would know as well). People will question if there are real issues surrounding him (for example the people in North Korea, they have been told ever since they were very young to love their leader but they still know there is something wrong because their society has so many problems so of course the love is forced unlike the love for the thai king).
"ฝรั่ง: but... people MUST be allowed to express their opinion ฝรั่ง: if they can't .... then people start saying that the King is oppressive... and bad"
