I got children.
I cannot speak to them with academic jargons, can I? :)
I got students, but I cannot talk to them with "fully-loaded" academic jargons either, right?
I have studied my academic craps for more than 5 years. But, to convey my knowledge to my children/students, I may have limited success by regurgitate everything I know to them.
So, if I have to talk with my sons about my PhD work, I would draw a silly cartoon and use terms as simple as possible.
If I have to talk to my students, figures and terms used during conversation/presentation would be more academic, complicated.
When I present my works to a guru in the field. It would be a waste of his time, if I use terms used for my children/students.
So knowing audiences and estimating their background knowledge about the issues are also of important.
If there is time constraint for a presentation, selective, relevant material along with several rehearsal are necessary.
Non-verbal communication (eye-contact, hand gesture and so on) is another good thing to be added into the presentation. Monotonous talks make me sleep... :)
I always think about my professors in Thailand who always sent me to a temporary nirvana and REM sleep... and don't do what they did... :)
