Don't worry too much na. It depends la. Some may get their passport back within 2 - 3 weeks na. As long as you submit your application BEFORE your current visa expires with all related documents, it should be ok la. While your application is in process, it is considered that you are here legally na.
I used to experience similar case that my visa was due to expire and due to other circumstances, i couldn't submit well in advance.So I submitted just a couple of days before it expired. I called home office about my status during the process of my application. They said while the application is still with them, I was here legally according to my previous visa status. So at the time, they said I could even work up to 20 hours per week according to my student visa status until I get the approval of the next visa.
But if the new application is rejected, this is another issue which I have no experience na.
