Khun Hotlver,
Good for you! Im impressed for a young man like you to be thinking about social responsibility. The world would have been a much better place to have more social conscious people. I wish you all the success in your altruistic plan.
For Thailand, Ive been doing my part. My intent focuses more on children and younger generations development to generate productive citizens for our society. I have a few children under my sponsorships. Actually, one has recently graduated from college. We met when she was in fifth grade. She is now working. Im very proud of her. She paid me a visit during my recent stay in Thailand.
If you are not steadfast with senior citizens plan, there are some organizations that help needy children and people to be on their own feet. For example, Development and Education Programme for Daughters and Communiites (DEPDC) is to prevent young girls from being sold/lured into prostitutions. Because of poverty, young girls were sold by their parents with the belief they will be working as domestic maids. The organization is run by Khun Sompop Jantraka in Chiangrai. Only a contribution of $750/year can support a child for schooling, meals, clothing, and other necessities for child developments.
Others in BKK: Khun Khroo Nuannoi Timkul and her home school. She takes in many slum children providing them meals and education. Khun Khroo Yoy is another good Samaritan. He picks up children on the streets of BKK; and provides them shelters and education. These are mostly the children of migrant workers e.g. construction, or runaway kids, who experience abuses/exploitations. Another is an orphanage in Kanchanaburi; it is run by Bhuddhist nuns.
Other program is Positive Partners, found by Khun Mechai Weeravaidhaya. The program is designed to help HIV infected people, who are fully capable to lead normal life. Because of social stigma, these people are deprived from opportunities to survive in the society like others. They face discriminations and exclusion. The program provides them and their relatives, who are willing to embrace these patients, loans (micro-financing) to start small businesses.
Volunteering in other countries beyond Thailand, is my personal yearning. Its something that imprinted in me ever since 1987 when I was a volunteer with the Red Cross working on Ethiopian refugee cases. Though never visited the camps myself, simply read their letters and listened to friends, who were humanitarian aides, on these peoples plight; it profoundly impacted me. Later, I befriended with some of the lucky refugees who migrated to the US. I since wanted to do something for refugees or displaced people by whichever cause namely wars or natural disasters.
Its nice to have an opportunity discussing on this social responsibility issue with you.
Best Wishes,
จากคุณ :
