Dont be upset and dont be discouraged yet krub.
You can change the topic. You can do other things as well. But I woud say the fact that you are a PhD student, you should be able to think critically and be able to solve whatever problem you have. In my opinion, it is better to do more research on your thesis topic than complaining it online krub.
I would say your case is quite normal. When I was doing my PhD, my PhD advisor doesnt really know much about my project either. He virtually has no clue about the work indeed. At that time, what I did was that I read a lot. Luckily, I got really wonderful collaborators who were able to at least give me some suggestion about the project and broadening my viewpoint.
So one way to solve this problem is finding a good collaborator who is working or have experiecne in your research if possible.
As an option, in your department there might be someone who had done some work in the same area so you can kind of ask them to help you out or at least give you some suggestion.
Go to meeting if you can, usually you can get so many ideas in a good meeting. Attend all the talk that is related to your topic. This way, in worse case scenerio, you will at least get a big picture of your project. Why is it important? How is it going to fit in the field? and so on.
After getting big picture of why should you do your project, you can then design experiment or plan the strategy to tackle your problem so that you can achieve the goal without wasting your time reading some shit that is totally unrelated to your work.
Try to think in the different way to solve your problem. Is there any alternative way to actually solve your problem, one that would give similar result or at least one that would let you draw the conclusion from your work. I would say there would be more than one way to solve one problem. It totally depends on you if you choose it wisely or not.
Anyway, I am sure that I am not as smart as a mathematician. I still need assistance from calculator so I think you should be able to solve it without any difficulty.
Think possitively, This way, you will be able to develop yourself as an independent investigator! It actually will benefit you!!!
