FYI : AWAY FROM CLASSES <: U.S. Department of State; Bureau of Consular Affairs :>
*Students who are away from classes for more than five months will have to apply for and receive a new F-1 student visa to return to school in the United States.
This pertains both to students who have fallen out of student status while in the United States and students who have spent more than five months outside the United States in an excused absence from school.
Students who fall out of status while in the United States
Under immigration law, a student is no longer in student status if classes are not resumed within five months of the date of transferring out of the previous school or within five months of the date of program completion, whichever is applicable, although no formal finding of loss of status has been made.

...................... FYI :BEING OUT OF STATUS
*For nonimmigrants in the U.S., who have an Arrival-Departure Record, Form I-94 with the CBP admitting officer endorsement of Duration of Status or D/S, but who are no longer performing the same function in the U.S. that they were originally admitted to perform (e.g. you are no longer working for the same employer or you are no longer attending the same school), a DHS or an immigration judge makes a finding of status violation, resulting in the termination of the period of authorized stay.

FYI Maintianing your Immigration Status
::::::> http://www.ice.gov/sevis/sevisfactsheet.htm
Failing to maintain your status could result in serious consequences and may affect your ability to remain in or return to the United States. If youre an international student or exchange visitor studying in the United States, know your responsibilities.
Every visa is issued for a particular purpose and for a specific class of visitor. Each visa classification has a set of requirements that the visa holder must follow and maintain. Those who follow the requirements maintain their status and ensure their ability to remain in the United States. Those who do not follow the requirements violate their status and are considered out of status.
Failure to maintain status can result in arrest, and violators may be required to leave the United States.
Violation of status also can affect the prospect of readmission to the United States for a period of time. Most people who violate the terms of their status are barred from lawfully returning to the United States for years.
Recognize And Avoid Status Violations
By violating the requirements that govern your immigration status, you may jeopardize your ability to remain in the United States as a student or exchange visitor.
Examples of violations include the following:
๐Failure to enroll by the date specified by your school or exchange visitor program.
๐๐Unauthorized employment during your stay.
๐๐๐Failure to leave the United States following completion of your course, exchange visitor program, or program-related employment.
๐๐๐๐For academic students (visa category F-1): Failure to maintain a full course load without prior authorization for a reduction from your designated school official.
