To address the question, many Americans particularly the poor and lower middle class will suffer from higher cost of livings; be it on food, some consumer products and services. There will definitely be labor shortages especially in service sector e.g. restaurant, constructions; home improvements, landscaping, hospitalities (hotels); domestic aides (nannies), etc. Its true that the business groups have high influence; and they do flex their muscles in term of lobbying. However these are big corporations (e.g. pharmacuetical, health insurance, oil & gas, government contracts, defense corporations, etc) with mega billions of dollars in revenue not the small businesses.
The big corporations mostly do not rely on illegal immigration labors, but the small businesses do. Since America strongly encourages/promotes capitalism (the bottom line: green bucks matter most), fierce competitions are rampant. Some small businesses like ethnic grocery stores or restaurants not the national chains- have low margins. For these small businesses to survive, they need to cut operating costs. Thus, cheap labor and non-benefit are viable solutions. Its not the small businesses fault; nor is it the illegal immigrants. This is a natural response to the mechanism of the market: supply and demand. Im not saying its a good practice; but we need to understand the causes in order to address the issues appropriately. It is therefore the governments responsibility to help small businesses finding ways to be independent-free from cheap illegal immigrant labors; and still be able to remain competitive.
In term of health care burdens, the health care system as a whole has been failing. Its not solely caused by illegal immigrants. True, they contribute to some; but in small faction when compared to the whole system. Most hospitals in this country are striving to remain afloat. Many hospitals in poor neighborhoods were shut down.
To rectify the whole system by tackling at illegal immigrants, it seems to be at the wrong end. There are many issues need be addressed i.e. frivolous lawsuits, very high premiums for doctors practice, the administrative bureaucracy, etc. The tide of health insurance is another issue to be tackled. Once you loose your job, your insurance vanished as well. Or the insurance benefits diminish when you retire. This problem affects to all legal middle and lower income classes alike.
A professor in public health at Harvard University, suggested years ago that health care should better be treated as not-for-profit. His suggestion may prove true.
For the diseases, yes its true. But its not only the illegal immigrants; the legal ones even citizens can also be the carriers. Remember a case of an American man who had an airborne disease flew back to the US even though he was advised by the authority of one the EU countries not to do so.
Another case, a trainee from Asia at my ex-company who came to the US legally, he did not informed his health condition to the company medical unit for fear of not being selected for the Assignee program. When he had health problem, the nurse and the doctor could not provide him the appropriate care.
This probably is the MS-13, vice M-13, the Salvadorian gang. Yes, Im well aware of their stories. Indeed, they are the problem. However, there have always been street gang issues since in the past with other immigrants, legal or illegal alike. For example the Mafia, which has been managed to under control not that long ago; and some Asian gangs (I do not remember names) in San Francisco. Im not saying its okay; my point is the problem has just not recently emerged with this generation, but it has taken place in the past. And it did not only cause by the illegal immigrants, but by all.
To be fair, they do contribute to the society by providing us services and put food (considerably cheap) on our tables. They also contribute to economy in term of consumptions, paying sales tax, property taxes, etc. Many places, where the local economies were on verge of failure or dead, became robust by the small business stores run by illegal immigrants. The old town near my neighborhood is a good example. The town was dead most shops were closed down; now they revive by these people.
Many problems on illegal immigrant can be addressed by putting them under the system where the governments have control over them; where the government can oversee; be it health care, health, tax, crimes, etc. Let them contribute back to the social welfares in the form of paying taxes. Im sure many of them would be happy to do so; to contribute something back to the society. I know of some who are doing just that.
If we let them remain in hiding; the problems will continue not only they are subject exploitation but also other social issues will persist. Also, America will loose tax incomes from them.
