    Remember this book, ต้นส้มแสนรัก (My Sweet-Orange Tree)? What a book!

    I read this book in Thai version probably over 25 years ago; and again 15 years later.    I recently got the English version from an Iranian friend who highly recommended me to read.  So I did; I finished it last night.  As always, the book captivated me as it did in the past.

    Zeze’s imaginations and his mischief kept me smile while reading.  His tenderness towards “King Luis”, his little brother and his teacher softened my heart.  Towards the end, I felt his grief/anguish for the loss of his “Portuga”, the real sweet-orange tree.  A great book!


    Another book that I think worth reading is “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini.  It depicts a relationship of two Afghan boys grew up together then were parted by unfortunate incidents as well as the invasion of the Russian forces.  The surviving boy (the master), who carries the guilt to his manhood, finally got the opportunity for redemption to do the right thing for his boyhood friend (the servant) who turned out to be his half brother.   Apart from being riveting, it also well depicts the Afghan culture.  Among many beautiful aspects of its culture, it too has its share of shortcoming, i.e. the class system; the discrimination upon the minority, the Hazaras.  It also reminds us of series of violence through which Afghans have been struggling.

    I saw the movie as well; a very good movie.  The music is simply delightful.  However, I still like the book better.
