University of Erlangen-Nuremberg: Chemical and Bioengineering (Master)
Degree Master of Science
Course Language(s) English (50%), German (50%)
Beginning of Programme Intensive German language course: September Lecture programme starts mid-October
Programme Duration 3 to 4 semester
Application Deadline March 31 (pre-application)
Description of Content The Master's course in Chemical and Bioengineering spans the range from the classical physical and chemical processes for material conversion to the increasingly important biological processes. Knowledge from the fields of chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics and engineering sciences is brought together to apply processes developed on the laboratory scale and adapt them for production on an industrial scale. The student can focus his or her programme on chemical or biological applications or on process technology and choose from a broad range of subjects. Design experience is gained in a group project for all students in the course.
Course Description (read more) Educational Organisation Students of Chemical and Bioengineering choose one of four specialisations (engineering chemistry, biotechnology, process technology and product design, thermofluid dynamics) and so fix two main subjects. Through the choice of seven other subjects from three categories they maintain a certain breadth in their studies. The first two semester are course work (lectures, tutorials, laboratory practicals and examinations). At the start of the third semester students participate in a three week group design project (Projektierungskurs) and then undertake their internship. The thesis project is completed in the fourth and final semester of the programme.
Forms of Assessment Most lecture subjects are assessed by oral examinations. Some subjects are ungraded and are assessed either orally or by a written test. The thesis project is assessed on the basis of the written report.
Study Abroad Unit(s) The internship may be undertaken at a suitable company outside Germany.
Course Objectives The Master's course in Chemical and Bioengineering is aimed at educating engineers for careers in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries or in biological and environmental process technology and preparing them for the complex tasks in these branches. A balance between practice and theory and an orientation to industrial and social developments is achieved in a curriculum including both classical fundamentals and modern topics from current research and by close co-operation with the relevant industries.
