Ali Demirci (Head of Geography Department at Fatih University, Istambul, Turkey) informes you that the Geography Department at Fatih University is seeking one full-time faculty member at the Assistant Professor level.
"The Geography Department at Fatih University is a growing department with an active undergraduate and graduate program. We have emphasis on spatial technologies, urban geography/planning, environmental sciences/geography and geographic education. Our aim is to produce high quality students who are able to easily acquire jobs in the private and public sector or pursue further academic education either nationally or internationally through an applied geography curriculum, modern laboratory equipment and appropriate current software (i.e. ArcGIS, ERDAS, TransCAD). Our faculties stress student involvement in applied research at both the undergraduate and graduate level. We have been a leader for the promotion and development of spatial technologies in Turkey and have hosted the only continuing GIS conference in Turkey. Our future goal is to be one of the leading Geography departments in Europe and the leading center for GIS in South Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Part of this plan includes the development of a Ph.D. program in the next five years.
Fatih University is a new university (founded 1996) with the purpose of teaching science and technology to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to contribute to the scientific and technological enhancement of the country. The University provides its students with modern facilities in the all fields of sciences, engineering and social sciences. Its faculties regularly participate in international conferences, are involved in national and international research projects and have an excellent publication record. Fatih University strives to strike the appropriate balance between academic research and teaching.
We are searching for applicants with a background in physical geography, spatial technologies (GIS, Remote Sensing, GPS), environmental science, and hydrological modeling. Applicants with experience in applying these technologies to critical environmental problems (particularly watershed analysis) are preferred, as is a commitment to facilitating undergraduate and graduate research. In this position, the person is expected to teach the following undergraduate courses per academic year, e.g., earth sciences, geomorphology, soils, weather and climate, and hydrology, in addition to a graduate course in her/his specialty area. It is expected S/he will be actively involved in departmental activities including projects, organizations, conferences, club activities, field trips, and joint research/publications with other faculty members. Instruction will be in English.
Appointment begins September 2008. An earned Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment.
