I've been taking a kick-boxing class for just over a year, 2 times a week. I don't know if it is a thai-boxing. The class I'm taking is the combination of punching&kicking the punching bag in various ways: hook, jab, cross, hit using elbow, front kick, side kick, round-house kick (I'm not sure I even spell this one right), etc. We also do rope-jumping, push-ups, rolling on the floor, all kind of boot-camp style exercising. But the most interesting thing we do in the class in that the instructor (american guy but originally from Guatemala) makes us pair with the partners and do 2-3 rounds of boxing, 3 minutes each. It's one thing to hit a punching bag which never hits you back. But when you're sparring with a partner who will hit back, that's another thing. It can be dangerous too but in our class we have the rule, no face/head hitting. There're only women in the class. So it's like girl-fight. We don't really punch each other too hard. It's fun. The women in the class look very fit, very athletic.
I've been going to gym for many years, taking several exercise classes like jazz dances & step aerobics before I tried kick-boxing last year when I joined the new gym. Yes, I think kick-boxing is very good form of exercising because it is the combination of aerobic & core muscles work-out that exercises the heart and strengthens the muscles at the same time. I've started to develope the six-packs (actually more like 4 packs) for the first time. It's so cool. And also, boxing can be used as the self-defence. But to tell the truth, I don't think I can fight on the streets using what I learn from my boxing class. There is no rule in street-fighting unlike in the class. The most I would do if someone attacks me is probably front snap kick or round house that person really hard on his knees, make sure he fell down, then kick hard on his stomach and run away fast, vey fast.
Sounds violent, isn't it? But kick boxing is a great work-out. It can be very tiring and draining when you are still new at it but later the body will build the stamina to endure harder exercise.
