If you are planning to come here to study, the only choice would be getting an I-20 for F-1 Student visa (so you can go to school). For your wife, if she's also planning to study, she should do the same, but if she only wants to work, F-2 (dependent visa) is fine.
Now, having said all that, for F-1 student, working outside of campus or on-campus more than 20hr/week is illegal. There are TONS of Thai students working in Thai restaurants receiving cash and authorities often turn a blind eye. Unfortunately, in this economy, a job is hard to come by. I suggest you learn how to fix cars, plumbing, electronics,...etc. Anything with "skill" labor (please, massage doesn't count!) will get you a better job with much higher pay (illegally of course). I know someone who make a living selling and installing satellite dishes with Thai channels on a hacked receiver box.
After graduation, you will have 1 year to stay and work (I'm not sure about the new rule, but it might be 6 months if you cannot find a job in a related field). If you're lucky, the employer can apply a H-1 visa to work longer, or better yet, sponsor a green card for you.
