What you did was very nice. However, your timing wasn't right, imo.
It sounds to me like you were behind/following/running after her which could be scary to some :)
Had you talked to that lady IN the store DURING her conversation with the store owner or AFTER their conversation,
things might have turned out differently, in a good way :)
Also, the things you said to her might not come out right (like you wanted).
"Do you want coffee?" -- This sounds a little weird, coming from someone who you don't know, doesn't it?.
It's like you want to invite her to have coffee with you or sell her coffee (on the sidewalk?).
Next time try to make eye contact with the person first,
if s/he looks lost then you can ask "do you need help?"
or "can I help you with something?"
Just yesterday I saw a bumper sticker that read "Being nice to other people is a really good idea."
Please, don't be discouraged just because of this incident na ka :)
