There are 20 groups of car for car insurance premium purposes and there are 3 types of insurance policies.
1. Third party only
This is the minimum level of insurance cover the law requires you to have to drive a car in the UK.
It does not cover any damage to your own vehicle only your liabilities to other parties. If you crash into someone and youre to blame then your insurance will cover the damage to the other driver's car. Youre not covered if the accident was your fault or if your vehicle is stolen or damaged by fire. Third Party insurance is recommended if your vehicle is worth less than 500 GBP.
2. Third party fire and theft
In addition to third party only cover, this will insure your own vehicle against theft or damage caused by fire.
3. Comprehensive
Full comprehensive cover is the most expensive car insurance you can buy. In addition to the cover provided by Third Party Fire and Theft, Comprehensive also covers accidental damage to your own vehicle. It is strongly recommended if your vehicle is worth more than 3000 GBP.
Insurance premium for Golf GTi is normally high, it is usually classed in between group 16-18. I am not at all surprised that you will have to pay a high premium for it, especially, on an international driving licence and a first time policy holder.
To get a better rate premium, you have to have a certain number of years of No Claim Bonus (meaning having your own policy for many years without claiming for any accidents), over 30 years old, have held full licence and been driving for more than 5 years, and postcode area of where you live.
