I got a scholarship for my PhD study in the US. If I am not mistaken, there was one adjustment of my monthly stipend from 1,100 to 1,200 USD.
That was a big relief--- thankful expression to Kor Por for that raise, first of all.
I got this scholarship when I was around 31 years of age. At the time, my wife and I had a 2.5-y-o child coming along with us. Although my wife got another scholarship for herself.
When combined, we just got by (marginally)---- we had to bring our son to a daycare facility which cost us almost 800 USD/month. In the first 3 years, we seldom went to have anything at restuarants.... We cooked more than 99.99% of the meals; even our lunch, we packed it or drove back home to eat lunch at home.
During our 6 years there in the US, I came back home ONCE (because of my dental problems), while my wife and kids never came back until we moved back permanently.
We believe that if we came for just the two of us without the kids, we should be able to save tons of money--- maybe enough to buy a new house in Thailand.... :) Thus, for an ordinary student, with that kind of monthly stipend, it should be sufficient.
Well, that depends primarily on lifestyles and cost of living in cities.... My wife and I like to cook and do not have a night-time lifestyle. Although we really like to travel, but we had never been in the "minus" territory despite such overwhelming financial burden from our children.
We lived in Colorado which has a relatively high living expense but it's not that high compared to Seattle, LA, San Diego, New York, Chicago, Boston or Philadelphia....
Anyway from our past experiences I still believe that we still could get by and survive in those big cities with Kor Por's stipend as well. :)
