To me, traveler check (in USD) is the best in term of rate, convenience and safety. There is a fee per exchange. But, the fee is flat regardless of the check value. If a check value is $50, the fee is 33bahts. If a $100 check, the fee remains the same.
With TCs, I can exchange at any bank nearest to home without travelling to black markets in BKK. Thats very convenient. Though black markets offer slightly higher rate without fee, but travelling time and the incurred costs offset the difference.
Some banks may waive the buying cost if you are a customer. My banks do not charge me. Also, like comment #5 stated, there will be no fee if you are an AAA member. When I was (years ago), I bought from AAA without any cost.
With leftover USD TCs, I normally deposit them in my US bank accounts. There is no associated fee.
TC has its disadvantage or rather inconveniences. For safety purpose, it must be signed immediately when bought. In addition, the check bearer must present his passport when an exchange is made.
