Hmmmm, what I've been observing is that this type of thread is pretty popular. I think that there has to be one every week about Thai girls looking for foreign men and vice versa/ foreign men got hurt by Thai girls and vice versa/ Thai prostitution, how foreigners view, talk, comment about Thailand and prositution, etc. Seriously, every week. And they always get commented on at a large scale with a range of mild disagreement to a serious debate to some kind of fight.
The funny thing is that from my personal experience outside of this cyber space, most of my friends are not Thai, none of my colleagues are Thai and Pantip is pretty much where I go for that feeling of being in the Thai community, and I have never, ever, EVER heard my friends or colleagues or any person of smallest acquintance to me say anything about Thai people even remotely as degrading as some of the things I read on here, which is ironically said by Thai people ourselves, about ourselves, based on their experiences with some foreigners or heard from other Thai people (a friend, a friend of a friend, etc.).
I might be fortunate to be surrounded by such open-minded people, but I also wonder if we are really judging ourselves based on what "we" think other people perceive us, through all these horror stories that circulate from one person to the next. Maybe we place so much importance in race because it is what "we" subconsciously place an importance on (i.e., looking down on Isan and Laos people, a strong sense of ethnic community, etc.). We put people in various categories of stereotypes and talk about them as a mass, in which we pat ourselves on the back and say that it's ok to do so because other people are doing the same thing to us.
If I were to brag about my husband, it would probably be how good of a man he is. To me, it doesn't matter if he's white, black, Asian, Thai, Turkish, etc., because I can look anyone in the eye and say that I'm lucky to be with such a good man. I say that for myself and all my experiences leading up to this point, and I should think that it would be a little fairer if we could look at things as we experienced them and not rely so much on others' opinions to shape our own pigeon-holes to put people into.
Sorry for such a long rant of an opinion :p
